Signups now underway for several NIBROC events and competitions
In just two weeks’ time the Annual NIBROC Festival will be turning 70, and this year’s lineup of events is looking to offer something for everyone.
2022 NIBROC Photo Contest
The Appalachian Photographic Society will once again be presenting their NIBROC Photo Contest, allowing amateur photographers ages 16-and-up the opportunity to win prizes and recognition for their photographic work.
Photos must be the original work of the participant, and they must be mounted and ready to exhibit. Photos can be framed, but glass must be removed for safety concerns. An entry form should be filled out and attached to the back of each photo. No names, logos or watermarks should appear on the front of the photo.
One color or black-and-white photo may be entered in each of the following categories: People, Nature/Wildlife, Scenic and Miscellaneous. Photos must be 5×7 or larger in size. For additional contest directions, please contact Peggy Yeager at (606)528-3561 or (606)524-5576.
Entries for this year’s Appalachian Photographic Society NIBROC Photo Contest can be dropped off at the Folktale Coffee and Bakehouse in downtown Corbin or at the Corbin Public Library. Entries will be accepted from either location between July 24-Aug, 8. Late entries will be accepted on Tuesday, Aug. 9 until 5 p.m.
Pickleball Tournament
This year, a NIBROC Pickleball Tournament will be held at the Corbin Recreation Center. What exactly is pickleball? It is a game using paddle and a net, and combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The ball used is very similar in appearance to a wiffle ball.
Men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories will be featured. The cost will be $10 per person for Corbin Rec Center members with an additional $5 for non-members.
If interested, please email kimmwal@bellsouth.net to register your team.
Cornhole Tournament
Tomahawks Axe Club in downtown Corbin will once again be hosting a cornhole tournament for NIBROC, taking place on Saturday, Aug. 13. Start time is set for 1 p.m., and there will be a $60 entry fee per team.
The double elimination tournament will feature a $1,500 payout in cash and prizes.
Signups are open now at Tomahawks. For additional details call (606)595-1080.
Tennis Tournament
The Corbin High School girls tennis team has announced that they will be hosting a NIBROC Tennis Tournament at the high school on August 13-14. Details of the tournament, including how to signup, can be obtained at www.mountaintennis.org, the official website of the Mountain Tennis Circuit.
A link to the MTC website can also be found on the official NIBROC Festival Facebook page.
2-Mile Race, Fastest Kid in Town
The always-popular NIBROC 2-miler and Fastest Kid in Town races will be making their return to the festival this year. Both are scheduled to take place on Friday, Aug. 12, with the Fastest Kid race set to get underway at 7 p.m., and the 2-miler to begin at 8 p.m.
A Facebook event page that has been established for the 2-miler states, “This is a flat/fast course… PR perfection! We average about 250 runners/walkers. This route is perfect for the pros and beginners! Strollers are always welcome. Custom age group medals along with super-cool overall awards. Shirts guaranteed to preregistered runners only. Register at Nibroc2Miler.com.”
The Fastest Kid in Town is a quarter-mile race for children ages 3-12. Registration for this event is also currently ongoing at Nibroc2Miler.com.
Parade
This year’s NIBROC Parade will be held on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. Lineup will be an hour prior on Master Street, and the parade will progress from there all the way down Kentucky Avenue. Parade organizers ask that any floats in the parade be decorated so that decorations can be viewed from both sides of the street.
To register a float or vehicle, or a group of people walking (with or without banners), visit the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce website at www.southernkychamber.com. There is no fee to register.
In case of a rainout on Thursday, the parade will be moved to the same time on Saturday, Aug. 13.
