Williamsburg homeless shelter says women no longer welcome

Homeless women in Williamsburg will now have to find someplace besides the town’s homeless shelter, Emergency Christian Ministries, to stay.
Bill Woodward, director and case manager at Emergency Christian Ministries, said the organization made the decision about a week ago to house only men for at least the time being.
Woodward said that the last woman moved out of Emergency Christian Ministries on Monday and no more are being accepted right now.
Woodward said the shelter, which has been open since 1991, has always had to work to keep the male and female occupants separated, even though they each have separate dormitories.
Over the last year, Woodward said the problem of men and women trying to sneak into one another’s room has increased significantly.
"It seems that in the last year things have just gotten out of hand," Woodward noted. "We want to do good. We are Christian-oriented. Of course, we can’t have any fornication or adultery going on up here."
He said the decision to house only men instead of only women simply came down to numbers and the fact that the shelter gets a lot more males than it does females.
Woodward noted that the shelter didn’t put anyone out in the cold and made arrangements for women staying at the shelter to go somewhere else and helped them get there.
Emergency Christian Ministries has an agreement with the KCEOC shelter in Gray, to house its female clientele. The Gray shelter houses only women, Woodward said.
Woodward said that it is unclear at this point when the ministry will begin allowing women to stay there again.
He said some renovations would need to be done to help keep the men and women separated before women are allowed to return.
This kind of work takes money though, and it will boil down to how long it takes the shelter to raise the funds.
Emergency Christian Ministries can house up to 60 people at one time, but Woodward noted that the ministry is also in need of some new mattresses and cots.

The shelter had a problem with women and men sneaking into each others room to have sex. Read the article. The managers want to keep it a place for the homeless, not let become a house of prostitution.
Dear Christian (I use this term here very loosely) Ministries & Bro. Bill Woodward:
You allege you read the Bible and it does not permit you to continue to shelter these homeless women and children. Please, read it again and, this time, pay attention.
Doesn’t the YMCA and YWCA do the same thing?
They’re seriously separating families?
Good point Melshome. Spoken like a true lawyer. Let’s close the shelter down, this way no laws are broken. It’s not that the shelter has been doing good for anyone? Is it better to let more people suffer than be politically correct? I’m shaking my head in disbelief.
Do they accept funds/support from the federal or state government? Given that the pastor said the reason was a religious reason and not a safety reason, could this be considered impermissible discrimination?
This is what gets me upset about people around here. Whenever someone tries to help out the needy all the comments start about why should I have to donate. Just look at all the comments about Shop with a Cop article. No one seems to care much about the local drug problem or that a former District Judge is facing sentencing about his drug arrest. What about the murder of the young woman at the Crisp Court Apartments. It seems like there is a serious lack of priorities. 26% even cared to vote in the last election. Let’s do something about the drugs and violence (remember the student who was recently beaten at the college) and start caring about the quality of life for our generation and the next generation.
Read the story Pat! They didnt kick thrm out in the cold. They made arrangments to get the women to another shelter!!

Why on earth would I want to donate to this place that put women out in the cold? Give me the address for the Gray shelter, please.
