Corbin’s Huff, Whitley County’s Colmus advance to wrestling semi-state tournament
Corbin’s Seth Huff and Whitley County’s Anthony Colmus will be competing in the semi-state wrestling tournament Saturday in Lexington.
Huff finished second in the 215-pound weight class Saturday in the Region 7 Wrestling Tournament at McCreary Central.
Huff scored three pin falls, including against Kylon Williams of McCreary Central in the semi-finals to advance to the final match.
However, top seed Rocky Whitehead, of Madison South, who is undefeated on the season, pinned Huff for the victory.
Huff goes into Saturday at Great Crossing High School as the 15 seed and will face Walton Verona’s Zach Watson in the first round.
Colmus finishing third in the 138-pound weight class.
After securing a bye in the first round, Colmus pinned Keegan Musgrove of McCreary Central, Colmus lost to eventual champion Jonathan Gilbert of Madison Central in the semi-finals.
Colmus then came through with a late pin fall in the third-place match against Wayne County’s Coalton Kilburn.
Colmus goes in as the 12th seed and will face Grant County’s Anthony Webster in the first round.
• Other local wrestlers scoring finishes Saturday included:
•Whitley County’s Jackson Sutton lost his first match at 126 pounds, but scored victories in two of his next three matches, including a pin fall in the fifth place match over Connor Cordell of McCreary Central.
• Whitley County’s Sam Haynes placed fifth at 165 pounds.
After winning his first match by pinefall over Bell County’s Shawn Fuston, Haynes won three of five matchings, including a 14-13 decision in the fifth place match overDavalos Alex of Wayne County.
Corbin’s JP Carmichael finished sixth at 113 pounds.
Corbin finished ninth among the 15 teams while Whitley County finished 10th.
Corbin is sending nine wrestlers. Whitley County is sending two.
