Corbin schools resuming in-person instruction March 1

The Corbin Board of Education approved a motion last Thursday for students to return to in-person classes on March 1.

Under the motion that was unanimously approved, students would have the option to either continue to attend classes virtually, or attend in-person four days per week.

Superintendent Dave Cox said the plan is for students to be in person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

All students would continue virtual instruction on Wednesday.

In addition to giving custodial staff the opportunity to perform more extensive cleaning and sanitation mid-week, Cox said Wednesday would provide the opportunity for teachers to perform pullout groups and do remedial instruction for students.

School staff members will begin contacting parents/guardians to determine how they would like their children to attend class.

Cox emphasized that once classes begin, the next time period to change would be at the beginning or end of the grading period.

“That will be around the first of April,” Cox said.

“The main thing is that we got our staff vaccinated,” Cox said noting that the second rounds are scheduled to be completed by Friday.

Once an individual has the second dose, Cox said it will take approximately seven to ten days for the vaccine to become fully effective.

As a result, the board elected to hold off on in-person instruction until March 1.

In addition, Cox said the incidence rate and positivity rates are both decreasing.

Cox said the last day of school is still scheduled for May 14, with graduation on May 16.

“Spring break is still on the calendar,” Cox added.
