Whitley County High School tabs UC’s Zeke Eier as its new head football coach

Whitley County High School (WCHS) announced the selection of its new head football coach Wednesday afternoon.

Whitley County High School named Zeke Eier as its new head football coach Wednesday afternoon.

University of the Cumberlands assistant coach Zeke Eier has been selected as the new WCHS head football coach, the high school announced Wednesday afternoon on its Facebook page.

“Coach Eier brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to our program, but more importantly his enthusiasm for the future of our program and tenacity to succeed will be contagious,” said Whitley County High School Principal Julie Osborne.

Eier is the 11th person to lead the Colonel program replacing Jep Irwin, who led the program for the past two years.

Eier will start immediately and coach the team in spring practice. He has already begun the work of assembling his staff.

“I am excited to be here. I am thankful for the opportunity. Whitley County has wonderful people, and I look forward to meeting the players and getting to work,” Eier noted.

Eier has deep roots in the sport.

He played his prep ball in Ohio before becoming a key player at the University of the Cumberlands. He was a member of the Patriots team that was national runner up. The last six seasons he has served on Matt Rhymer’s staff at the University of Cumberlands, most recently as special teams coordinator and running backs coach.

During his six years on the Patriots staff, the team was 40-24 including 20-4 the last two seasons.

“Zeke is a winner in all regards. One of the smartest and most disciplined people I’ve ever been around,” noted Rhymer.

Eier’s expertise has been on the offensive side of the ball where he has been exposed to multiple offensive philosophies from the inside veer look that University of the Cumberlands rode to the national title game under Coach John Bland to the more recent shot gun spread look that University of the Cumberlands deployed under Rhymer.
