Corbin firefighters assist Knox Co. flood victims

A team of Corbin firefighters responded to calls to help check on residents in eastern Knox County affected by the flooding Sunday.

The five firefighters: Jack Partin, Chad Jackson, James Smith, Steven Walker, and Trevor Allen, took the department’s Chevrolet Suburban and rescue trailer to the Kayjay community, off of Ky. 223, to assist emergency personnel in performing welfare checks on residents trapped by the flooding.

“At one point, one of the roadways was completely gone,” Allen said of what firefighters faced in their efforts to reach residents.

For approximately four hours, Corbin firefighters went from house to house checking in with the residents.

“The water had went down a lot by the time we got there, “ Allen said noting firefighters sloshed through water that came up to their knees in places.

In all, Corbin firefighters visited about 10 homes, but, thankfully, weren’t called upon to perform any rescues.

Corbin firefighters were on scene until approximately 7 p.m.

Chief Barry McDonald said his firefighters did an excellent job.

“I’m proud of every one of them,” McDonald said.
