Local students participate in annual Mathematics Contest hosted by UC
More than 125 students from 12 local middle and high schools recently participated in the annual Mathematics Contest hosted by the University of the Cumberlands (UC).
The contest, which was sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Cumberlands, aims to prepare students for future careers in mathematics, physics and engineering fields. It is also an opportunity for students to spend time on Cumberlands’ campus.
“Our department enjoys spending time with the volunteers and giving high school and middle school students the opportunity to showcase their math skills, all the while the students get to see our beautiful campus,” said Sarah Hacker, an assistant professor in the Department.
The overall winners for the 2018 competition include Corbin High School in first place and North Laurel High School in second place, with both Lexington Catholic High School and Sayre School tying for third place.
Individual awards were also presented to the following students: Algebra 1 – First Place – Matthew Sanders, North Laurel High School; Second Place – Joaquin Pauig, Corbin High School; Third Place, Scotty Vandy, South Laurel High School; Fourth Place, Andrew Pham, North Laurel High School; Fifth Place – Kaiden Walden, Corbin High School.
Algebra II – First Place – Tracy Zhao, Sayre School; Second Place – Jason Zhang, Sayre School; Third Place, Jonathan Wright, Lexington Catholic High School; Fourth Place – Kevin Ramirez, Southwestern High School; Fifth Place – Allison Pham, North Laurel High School.
Geometry – First Place – Rex Norvell, Corbin High School; Second Place – Marshall Maguire, Southwestern High School; Third Place – Anabeth Sharpe, Whitley County High School; Fourth Place – Sean Simons, Corbin High School; Fifth Place – Trevor Jones, Whitley County High School.
Pre-Calculus – First Place – Aaron Johnson, Corbin High School; Second Place – Jared Wilson, Whitley County High School; Third Place – Will White, North Laurel High School; Fourth Place – Jacob Brooks, Whitley County High School; Fifth Place – Harry Wang, Sayre School.
