Man pulls knife on deputy, still on the run
Police are searching for the suspect in a botched late-night burglary attempt near Corbin, and say the man left the car he was driving behind at the house he planned to rob.
David Chavies, a resident of 67 KY Hwy. 1232, was seen leaping from the window of a residence at 269 Canoe Branch Road shortly after midnight Tuesday morning. According to Whitley County Sheriff Lawrence Hodge, his department received a call of a burglary in progress when the owners of the home arrived and found a strange vehicle parked on their property.
Deputy Scott Lake arrived at the scene and saw Chavies allegedly jump out of the window and run, escaping arrest.
“We flushed him out,” Hodge said. “He didn’t get anything from the house. We got there before he could.”
Sheriff’s Deputy Glenn Bunch later stopped a dark-colored pick-up truck near the intersection of Fifth Street and Black Diamond Road in which Chavies was a passenger. Hodge said Bunch ordered Chavies to “get down on the ground,” but said that he did not comply, then attempted to pull a six-inch knife. Bunch struck Chavies with his flashlight, and Chavies ran off into the woods.
Police searched for him through the night, and hadn’t found him at press time Tuesday.
Chavies is described as being 6-0 with brown hair. Hodge said if caught, he will be charged with burglary, wanton endangerment “and whatever else we can come up with between now and then.”
Hodge said Chavies is a convicted felon out of Laurel County.
