As radio commentator Stan Lovitt would say, Williamsburg senior Tosha Roberts came to play Saturday when the Lady Jackets took on the Cumberland Lady Skins. Roberts scored almost as many points as the entire Cumberland team in a 53-35 win.
Roberts poured in 27 points in leading Williamsburg to their sixth win of the year.
Williamsburg took control early, both on the scoring end of the floor as well as defensively.
It was the game plan of Williamsburg coach Jim Rains to slow down the scoring of Ashley Massey and Erica Letanosky.
The Lady Jackets did that and more. They were able to outscore Cumberland 15-2 in the opening quarter.
Although the Lady Redskins made a run in the second period, outscoring Williamsburg, 16-11, they were never able to take control of the game.
A more than successful night from the line helped the Lady Jackets. Williamsburg hit 16 of 22 free throws most of which came in the final quarter as the Lady Jackets held off a challenge by the Lady Skins.
The Lady Jackets will host Jellico Thursday night in a game Williamsburg hopes to avenge a 59-58 loss.

Lady Redhounds rout Middlesboro

Corbin coach said her team had focused on defense before playing the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets Monday night. The practice must have been perfect as Corbin stymied the Lady Jackets in the first three quarters before winning, 52-29.
“We knew (Mary) Flannary was strong inside, so we doubled down on her,” said Parsons. The Lady Redhounds defense not only did an outstanding job, they kept the Middlesboro leading scorer from getting a point in the first half. She finished with six points most of which came in the final period when the game had already been decided.
Corbin, who won their fifth straight game and 10th of their last 11 games, jumped out to a 18-9 lead at the end of one. From there it got ugly for the Lady Jackets. Corbin outscored Middlesboro 16-2 in the second quarter to lead 34-11 at the half. In the third quarter it was more of the same as Corbin went on a 12-2 run and led 46-13 entering the final eight minutes.
Middlesboro had just stunned the Bell County Lady Jackets in their last outing, 61-54. Ironically, they were the last area team to beat Corbin. The Lady Redhounds lost at Bell County 50-42 back on December 7.
Since that time, Corbin has won 10 of 11 games. The lone loss came in the championship of the Berea Holiday Classic in a loss to Woodford County. The Lady Redhounds will have two straight doubleheaders with the boys.
Friday night they will play in primetime when they take on the Lady Wildcats of Evarts at 7:30 at Gilliam Gym. The two teams head to Knox Central Tuesday night with the ladies playing the first game at 6 p.m.

Lady Cats fall to Whitley

For two quarters it looked like there was an upset in the making. The Lady Wildcats of Lynn Camp led the Whitley County Colonels, 23-15 at the half but lost the game 47-42.
As matter of fact, the Lady ‘Cats led by as much as 12 points on a couple of occasions with the last being at 23-11 when Brandy Noe hit one of two free throws with 2:11 in the second quarter.
However, Whitley County closed out the half with a pair of free throws by Puddie Hibbs and a basket by Kayla Haynes and trailed the Lynn Camp ladies, 23-15.
Whatever Lady Colonels coach Larry Anderson said at the half must have worked because Whitley County came out on fire in the third quarter.
The Lady Colonels outscored Lynn Camp 15-2 in the first five minutes, going from a eight-point deficit to a five-point lead (30-25) when Samanatha Daugherty hit two of four free throws over a twenty second span.
It was a game of two halves as Mandy Smith and Noe led the charge for the Lady Wildcats. The two along with 6-0 senior Amanda Smith scored 10 of the first 13 points as Lynn Camp jumped out of the gate with a 10-3 lead.
Haynes kept Whitley County in the game in the first quarter, scoring six of the eight points.
The third quarter saw sophomore Stephanie McCullah get her game in gear with eight of her 10 points in the first three minutes of the quarter. McCullah hit back to back threes to push Whitley County ahead, 27-25 causing Lynn Camp coach Richard Jones to call a timeout with 4:26 on the clock.
Lynn Camp finally got its second basket when senior Savannah Melton hit a three pointer to close the gap to two, 30-28.
Whitley County led at the end of three, 34-31 but Lynn Camp would settle down and put up a fight to the end.
A steal and lay-up by Mandy Smith and a basket by Melton pushed the Lady Cats back on top, 35-34.
The lead changed hands three times before Whitley County took the lead for good at 41-39. That came on a Daugherty three point play with 2:32 left in the contest. Trailing 42-40 when Kayla Osborne hit one of two from the line, Lynn Camp went cold from the field.
The Lady Cats turned the ball over three straight trips down the floor without getting off a shot. Meanwhile Whitley County was able to take a six (46-40) lead in the game. They were able to hit five of eight from the free throw line.
Whitley County (8-5) actually won the game from the line, hitting on 17 of 34 while Lynn Camp hit 8 of 14 from the charity stripe.
Noe led all scorers with 17 points. Three Lady Colonels hit in double figures with Haynes once again leading the way with 14 points. Daugherty added 11 points and McCullah hit for 10 points.
The loss dropped Lynn Camp to 5-5 on the season.
