Colonels knock off Panthers
After losing an overtime decision to the Campbell County (Tn) Cougars Monday night, the Whitley County Colonels had just enough under their legs to pull out a 74-69 shocker over the Knox Central Panthers Tuesday night in Barbourville.
Senior Sammy Wilson turned in the game of the year, scoring 33 points to lead the Colonels. Wilson hit 17 of 17 from the line and pulled down nine rebounds as well.
The win over the Panthers snapped a five-game losing streak and avenged a four-point loss to Knox Central.
“We have worked hard and really came together,” said Whitley coach Darrell Guffey. “They have really grown up in the last couple of weeks.
With the score tied 66-66, Wilson hit two free throws at the 2:41 mark. Lopez put the Panthers back on top with a three pointer, but Wilson hit two more from the line with :38 seconds. He added four more free throws in the final ten seconds to gave his team the win.
NOTE: The game with Jellico for Thursday night has been cancelled.
The Whitley County Lady Colonels made it three in a row Tuesday night with a 67-42 win over the Knox Central Lady Panthers in Barbourville.
Whitley County (13-10) and winners of three in a row, jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the game and settled for a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“We came out quick and didn’t miss anything in that first quarter,” said Lady Colonels coach Larry Anderson,
“Samantha Daugherty got us off to a big start with two three pointers in the period,” said Anderson.
Daugherty finished the game with a team high 19 points along with teammate, Stephanie McCullah. The duo accounted for 38 of the 67 points.
Whitley County stretched its lead to 38-23 by halftime then put the game away in the third quarter with an 18-7 run. The Lady Colonels led 56-30 heading into the final eight minutes.
Anderson went to his bench early and let every one get in the ballgame. The Lady Colonels game at Jellico Thursday has been cancelled.

After its loss to the Clay County Lady Tigers January 31 the Corbin Lady Redhounds vowed to start a new streak.
The did that Saturday with a 55-38 win over the Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats and added number two Tuesday with a 64-35 victory over the Williamsburg Lady Jackets.
Williamsburg still playing without starters Nicole Bryant and Katlin Faulkner got off to a slow start, scoring only five points in the opening quarter against the Redhounds.
Senior Tosha Roberts even gave Williamsburg a brief lead, 3-1 but back to back baskets by junior Katie Akins and senior Morgan Barley and Corbin grabbed the lead for good.
By the end of the first quarter, Williamsburg was very much in the game but trailed the Lady Redhounds, 10-5.
However, a 16-4 run in the first five minutes of the second quarter pushed the Corbin lead out to 26-9.
The Lady Redhounds (16-5) got two three pointers from Christina Sutton and Jamie Bonza that sparked the Corbin rally.
A three pointer by Roberts, who led the Lady Jackets with 10 points, cut the lead to 26-12 just before the half.
Another big run came in the third quarter and early in the fourth when Corbin struck for 17 unanswered points.
Akins led Corbin with a game high 16 points while freshman Mikkah Rogers added 11 points.
