Whitley gets revenge
Sophomore Stephanie McCullah had a big night as the Whitley County Lady Colonels got a bit of revenge on the Campbell County (Tn) Lady Cougars Monday night at Lawson Gym, winning 47-36.
The Lady Cougars won the first meeting between the two teams, 58-43. However this one belonged to Whitley County from the outset. The Lady Colonels trailed only once at 6-5.
A basket by McCullah and a pair of free throws by senior Tracy Jones with 3:21 in the quarter gave the Lady Colonels the lead for good, 9-6. The Lady Cougars closed the gap to 9-8 but Jones hit two more free throws and McCullah added a basket for a 13-8 lead at the end of one period.
Campbell County rallied early in the second quarter and cut the lead to three, 15-12 when Whitley County coach Larry Anderson called a time-out with 5:41 in the quarter. The Lady Colonels came out with a 7-0 run and took a ten-point lead in a two-minute span. McCullah hit a three pointer to start things off then followed with a basket inside the paint. Jones scored off a rebound basket and the score was 22-12.
Sierra Jessie and Kayla Haynes traded baskets in the final minute as Whitley County went to the dressing room with a 24-14 margin at the half.
McCullah opened the third period with a three pointer before Campbell County went on a 6-0 run to get within 29-22.
Again the Lady Colonels turned back the Campbell County challenge with a 5-0 spurt of their own. Haynes and Jones scored all five points.
The Lady Cougars did make one last run in the fourth quarter when they got as close as 38-34 but a McCullah basket off a fast break and five of six free throws in the final minute allowed the Lady Colonels the victory.
McCullah finished with 22 points while Jones added 12 points.
The Lady Colonels will be on the road Thursday night in a doubleheader with Jellico. The Lady Colonels and Lady Devils will kick off at 6:30 p.m.
•Whitley County rolled to a 61-20 win over the Cawood Lady Trojans, January 31. McCullah and Haynes led the Lady Colonels with 13 points each. There were 11 players score in the lopsided win.
Whitley County took a 21-7 lead in the first quarter then expanded that to 34-10 at the half. They outscored Cawood 15-0 in the third period and led 49-10 at the end of three.
