Williamsburg man gunned down outside of bar
Campbell County Sheriff’s deputies say a Williamsburg man was allegedly gunned down by his brother-in-law outside a bar late Thursday evening.
Campbell County Sheriff’s deputies have charged Zendal Campbell, 46, with criminal homicide following the shooting death of Jason Rhodes, 28, of Williamsburg.
Chief Deputy Charles Scott said that under Tennessee law, criminal homicide is an unlawful killing, and that at some stage, a grand jury will likely decide what degree of murder is an appropriate charge.
“Authorities feel that Campbell and Rhodes first confronted each other late Thursday night when the two met at a bar located not far from Campbell’s Melvin Hollow home. Close to midnight on Thursday, the angry confrontation turned deadly when Campbell killed Rhodes as Rhodes was a passenger in a parked pickup truck,” Campbell County Sheriff Ron McClellan wrote in a press release.
“This is an on-going investigation with detectives interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and working to establish the chain of events leading up to the crime.”
Scott said that Rhodes was married to Campbell’s sister, and that the two had been estranged for a month or so.
He said there were apparently some bad feelings, and that Campbell had warned Rhodes not to go back up on the property where Rhodes wife lived.
Alcohol was apparently involved in the killing, Scott noted.
Rhodes was shot once in the head with a .270 caliber rifle from fairly close range, police said.
Rhodes was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The driver hadn’t gotten inside yet, Scott said.
The shooting happened in a rural area around the center of Campbell County near Stinking Creek Road.
Funeral services for Rhodes are planned for Wednesday at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery, Croley Addition.
Campbell County Sheriff’s Detectives Don Farmer, Amy Hammac, and Larry Bolton are in charge of the investigation.
