•Speaking of our website, the forums are up and running. The sports site has been changed and should be more exciting than ever. The forum is set up like the popular Kentuckypreps.com and the Bluegrasspreps.
The topics are listed by sports instead of schools which will open the discussion to high school, college, Little League or whatever area of a particular sport you want to talk about. So, please get on the site and let’s talk sports.
•Congratulations to the Cumberland College Patriots. Coach Brad Shelton’s baseball team pulled off several upsets during the Region XI Tournament at Lebanon, Tenn. last week. I got to go down and watch the game against Trevecca Nazarene. The Patriots pulled out a shocker in the late innings to knock off the one-seeded Trojans.
The Trojans were very confident that they would win that game, let’s just say they were a little overconfident near the end of the game.
Cumberland battled their way to the winners’ bracket finals with a hard-fought win over the Mid-South’s regular-season and tournament champion, Campbellsville. Again the Patriots pulled out a close win and had to face the host team, Cumberland University in the finals. The Tennessee team won that battle forcing Cumberland back in the losers’ bracket.
Cumberland got a bit of revenge against Lambuth, the team that knocked them out of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Cumberland won that game and headed back to the championship round where they would have to beat Cumberland University twice. It didn’t happen but the Patriots represented Williamsburg well.
Cumberland got a little overlooked and proved they were one of the top teams in the country.
•Cara Rains, an outstanding athlete at Williamsburg, was a finalist in the First Corbin Financial/KHSAA State Sportsmanship Awards in Lexington Sunday night. She and Aaron Cash of Rockcastle County represented the 13th region.
Rains, who played basketball and softball, was an outstanding choice. She works hard at her games and plays with a great personality.
She received a mantle clock courtesy of the KHSAA Officials Division, a $200 book scholarship, courtesy of First Corbin Financial and a plaque courtesy of Conference Medal & Trophy.
Austin Fitch of Lexington Dunbar and Jill Duckworth of Henderson County were named the statewide winner. Mary Morgan of Williamsburg was the first female to win the award back in 1997. She also represented Williamsburg High School.
