Woodbine Classic
CDS/ICA of Lexington, brought a #9 state ranking into the 32nd Annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shootout and made it hard to believe there could be eight teams better in the state. CDS/ICA swept through the 36-team tournament field with a perfect 7-0 record to win the championship.
CDS/ICA started the tournament out on Friday night by handing the Southeast Mavericks (Corbin) a convincing 18-3 loss. Their next opponent turned out to be Kelly’s Plumbing (Danville). Although the game was a little closer, CDS/ICA still was the victor as they pulled out a 16-11 win.
The win helped them advance to face 2003 Shootout champions, Trophy World (Richmond). Trophy World also fell t the strong Lexington team by a final score of 14-9. Next up for CDS/ICA was the 2004 “D” state champions, the Trumps. However, CDS/ICA got off to a quick start and never relinquished the lead, winning, 21-10 Saturday night.
Sunday afternoon, CDS squared off with NWO (Cynthiana) in the semifinals of the winners’ bracket. In a low scoring, defensive lead game CDS remained undefeated and beat NWO, 10-4.
When the winners bracket final rolled around it was non other than defending tournament champion, Calvary Baptist (London) that faced CDS/ICA. Calvary played like a champion and fought hard, but were never able to get the lead. The game was tied at 10-10 in the late innings, but CDS/ICA was able to pull out a 13-10 win when they held Calvary scoreless in the final inning.
The win moved CDS/ICA into the championship game of the tournament. Their opponent turned out to be NWO (Cynthiana) who won the losers’ bracket. NWO had finished second in the tournament in 2002 and 2003 and wanted to get the Woodbine Rebels Softball Shoot-out crown.
However, CDS/ICA was not be be denied as NWO ran out of gas and were unable to beat the Lexington based team. CDS/ICA won the 32nd Annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shootout by beating NWO, 14-4.
