Colonels pounce Hogs
Whitley County came out on the winning end of a scrimmage with the Harrodsburg Pioneers Friday Night at WCHS, 20-10.
However, veteran coach Mike Campbell was all but pleased. “We didn’t play well on defense,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do. We didn’t run to the ball.”
The Pioneers scored on a first quarter field goal of 26 yards then added a touchdown late in the game against the number two defense, but the rest of the night belonged to the Colonels.
The Colonels offense sputtered in the first half, but Whitley County did put together one drive of note. The Colonels took over from the 30 yard line midway through the second period and drove the ball to the Harrodsburg 36 yard line before it stalled out. The big play was a Cody Jefferies run of 18 yards. Jefferies, a 6-0, 185-pound junior, took the ball at the 30 yard line on first and ten and bulled his way up to the 48 yard line.
Whitley County added another first down on a Ladale Rider run of four yards and a Jordan McCumbers pass to Brandon Pratt. After Rider moved the ball down to the 39 yard line and Eli Rhodes (5-8, 145, soph) added another three yards the drive hit a stumbling block. McCumbers missed on his target and a fourth down penalty pushed the ball back to the 41.
Harrodsburg responded with a drive from their own 30 yard line to the Colonels 16, but Whitley County refused to give up the end zone.
It didn’t take long for the Colonels to get started in the third quarter. The Colonels came back with a touchdown on its initial drive. Jefferies had a 14 yard run to the 44 yard line. Rider gave the Colonels a lift to the 49 yard marker before Teague broke loose on a 19 yard gain to the 30.
Teague got loose for a run to the four yard line and a late hit pushed the down inside the two yard line. Rhodes got the carry and the touchdown on the ensuing carry. The PAT made it 7-3.
Junior Kevin Wells picked off the Harrodsburg quarterback on the following series. With each drive beginning at the 30 yard line, the Colonels began to wear down the Hogs. Jefferies got to the outside for a 48 yard run to the 13 yard line. Whitley County would get inside the seven before being stopped.
A blocked punt would have given the Colonels great field position to end the third quarter but the ball was placed at the 30 yard line once again. The Colonels moved the ball down the field and Eric Partin hauled in a 30 yard pass to put Whitley County ahead, 14-3 with 7:09 in the game.
Harrodsburg answered with a pair of long runs and closed the gap to 14-10 two minutes later.
Whitley County added another touchdown late in the game to get the 20-10 win.
The Colonels will open the season Friday night when they take on Middlesboro at 6 p.m. in the City/County Bowl at Bell County High School.
