‘Cats stratched
When the Lynn Camp Wildcats took the field against the Leslie County Eagles Friday night most fans were looking for a high scoring ball game. They got the high scoring game from Leslie County as the Eagles lit up the scoreboard for 44 points.
But it was the 18 points on the Lynn Camp side that disappointed coach David Mitchell. “It was a tough one, we didn’t play very well,” Mitchell said Monday. “We had a lot of mental breakdowns and didn’t get a whole lot done particularly on the defensive side of the ball.”
“Offensively, we had some positive things but for the most part, we had a lot of mental breakdowns,” said Mitchell.
“We didn’t get any real good pressure on the quarterback,” added Mitchell. Leslie County quarterback Quenton Morgan ran wild in the first half, leading the Eagles to 26 points
Morgan teamed up with Brian Hubbard to score the first touchdown with 1:38 on the clock as the Eagles took a 6-0 lead.
However, the Wildcats came right back as Jimmy Chaffin scored on a 31 yard run, tying the game at 6-6.
But it was the Eagles who put the next 20 points on the scoreboard behind the play of Morgan and company. Morgan hit B.J. Young on a 34 yard pass play then added a touchdown as he ran it in from five yards out. The Eagles tacked on the two-point conversion for a 20-6 lead.
It was three and out for the Wildcats who turned the ball over to the Eagles at the Leslie County 30 yard line. Morgan struck again on a 70 yard play to Young. The score stood at 26-6 at the half.
Two third quarter touchdowns saw the Eagles take a 38-6 lead in the game.
Lynn Camp refused to quit and scored two fourth quarter TD’s to leave with 18 points on their side of the scoreboard. Sophomore Joe Roskopf scored on a six-yard run then added a TD late in the game to account for the final margin.
“I was worried about the quarterback from the get-go,” said Mitchell. “We never put enough pressure on him.”
“We tried some blitzes and things and were not able to get to him,” Mitchell said. “That sort of opened the gates for him when we didn’t get to him.”
Roskopf finished the game with 15 carries and 53 yards. Chaffin led the Wildcats attack with 144 yards on 18 carries.
Defensively, Josh Reynolds, who carried the ball five times for 18 yards, had seven tackles to lead the team. Nick Scalf and Rodney Smith had five tackles each.
Lynn Camp will take on Middlesboro Friday night in the Laurel Bowl at Pineville. “Middlesboro will try to get 10 people on the line of scrimmage against you and play a man to man coverage,” Mitchell said. “Hopefully, we can take advantage of that and do some things throwing the ball.””They have several outstanding backs with some speed,” said Mitchell. “They do as good of a job running the ball as anyone around.”
“We will have to stop their running game,” added Mitchell. “They like to get in a lot of trips stuff and throw the ball out of that. They like to take advantage of your over aggressiveness.”
“We’ve got to play a lot better than we did Friday night,” said Mitchell.
