Buzzing Along
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets got back on the winning track when they downed the Pineville Mountain Lions, 37-7 to open the district portion of their schedule.
“We came up with some defensive stops that really help,” said Williamsburg coach Jim Black. “We go adjusted to their speed. I don’t think our kids expected that kind of speed from them.”
The Lions did get on the scoreboard first when they scored on the opening drive. Pineville took the kickoff to their own 38 yard line and drove the ball down the field, scoring with 9:12 in the period on a David Adams pass to Zac Churchwell from 29 yards out.
But once Williamsburg got the ball the Yellow Jackets responded. Junior Charlie Bryant saw his named called quite a bit. After a 14 yard pass to freshman Hagan Paul to the Pineville 46 yard line it was Bryant doing most of the damage.
Bryant’s second carry of the game was good enough for a 25 yard run to the Lions 29 yard line. Bryant added five more yards before quarterback Thomas Frazier was hit in the backfield for a one yard loss.
On third down Frazier went to the air and hit Stephen Jefferies for a 12 yard pass play to the 17 yard line. Bryant took it in for the score with 6:33 on the clock. Hamblin’s extra point tied the score at 7-7.
It was three and out for the Lions as Williamsburg got settled down on defense. A punt to the Jackets 25 had Williamsburg backed up. It didn’t last long as Frazier connected with Hamblin for a 19 yard pass play to the 48 yard marker. A four yard gain by Frazier and a four yard gain by Bryant set up a third and two for the Jackets. Bryant broke loose for a 14 yard run to the Lions 30. The duo of Frazier and Hamblin went in from that distance to put Williamsburg ahead for good. A bad snap lead to a two-point conversion as Hamblin ran the extra point into the end zone for a 15-7 lead with 1:54 in the quarter.
Neither team was able to push the ball across in the second period but the Jackets added 22 points in the second half.
Frazier scored on a one-yard run with 9:22 in the third period then Bryant added another score at the 2:49 mark of the quarter. Hamblin’s kick made it 29-7.
The Jackets picked up two points the easy way when the snapper sent the ball over Davis’ head on a punt attempt. Davis kicked the ball into the back of end zone as a Williamsburg player tried to recover for the TD. The safety gave Williamsburg a 31-7 lead.
Coach Black was ready to settle for a 24-point win but the reserves wanted more and scored with 2:02 left in the game. Backup quarterback Jordan Hughlett hit Thomas Rains on a nine yard pass for the final score.
“The line did a very good job in the second half,” said Black. “We were able to run the ball a lot better because of the line play.”
“Charlie had a great game,” added Black. The junior back ran the ball 21 times for 181 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win. “He did a heck of a job.”
“Hats off to him,” said Black. “He played so hard and his blocking on pass protection has improved so much from the beginning of the year.”
The Jackets will get their toughest test of the season Friday night when they travel to the Briar Patch to play the Somerset Jumpers. Somerset has been ranked in the Class A top ten since the season started.
