The Lynn Camp Wildcats took a big step in claiming a district title when they knocked off the Harlan Green Dragons, 29-0 in Harlan Friday night.
It was the Wildcat defense that stepped up and held the Dragons scoreless for the first time this season. It was also Lynn Camp’s first shutout.
Give credit to the hard working Jimmy Chaffin on offense as the senior led the way for the Wildcats with two touchdowns and 141 yards. On defense it was junior Justin Gorsuch with 13 tackles and senior Josh Reynolds with 11. Chaffin had an all-around game with nine tackles.
Chaffin scored the game’s first two touchdowns. The first came in the opening period when he took a carry 53 yards for the touchdown. The ‘Cats missed the extra point.
In the second period, Chaffin broke loose for a 39 yard run with 11:11 on the scoreboard. Senior quarterback Nick Scalf hit Chaffin in the end zone for a two point conversion and 14-0 lead at the half.
The Wildcats defense would not break in the second half when the Dragons came after Lynn Camp. Harlan used 12 plays and drove the ball to the Lynn Camp 27 when the drive was halted. The Dragons went for the field goal as Nathan Searcy tried a 44 yarder but it was blocked by the Wildcats.
The ‘Cats were forced to give up the ball and a 11-yard punt put the Dragons in excellent field position. Harlan got the ball inside the ten with the help of a penalty. However, go to man, Teddy Thompson was stopped short of the end zone.
The Wildcats still didn’t have the ball long as Lynn Camp gave the ball back to the Dragons. This time a defensive play by Josh Reynolds proved to be a game breaker. He intercepted a Jon Lundy pass and went into the end zone from 51 yards out. Chaffin made it 21-0 with the kick.
The final TD saw sophomore Joe Roskopf score on a four yard run with 10:22 left in the game. The touchdown was set up by Chaffin’s 49 yard run to the Dragons four yard line.
Lynn Camp will host the Evarts Wildcats Friday night as they celebrate Homecoming ’05. Lynn Camp has won eight of the last 10 meetings with the Wildcats. Evarts gave Lynn Camp fits last year before losing, 16-14.
