Police seek suspects in home invasion burglary
Two to three people that tried to break into the home of an elderly Whitley County couple Sunday evening picked the wrong place to try and break into, according to Whitley County Sheriff Lawrence Hodge.
“Ulys Cox and his wife came a hair from whipping the whole bunch that tried to come in on them. They’re lucky that Ulys didn’t kill them. He’s a good guy, but he won’t take any crap. He stout as a mule. He’s an old man, and he whipped them all,” Hodge said.
About 8:25 p.m., Hodge said the unknown defendants attempted to break into Eulas Cox’s home at 3460 Buck Creek Road near Jellico.
“There were some guys that came up to his house, and asked his son-in-law for a light. They walked on down the road, and a few seconds later they came in on the house on Ulys. A scuffle ensued, and Ulys and his wife got them locked in the garage, and locked out of the house,” Hodge said. “One jumped through the bedroom window jumping out of the house. We think there were two of them, and possibly three.”
No one was injured during the scuffle.
Cox and his wife didn’t know the perpetrators, Hodge added.
Hodge said police have been able to develop strong leads in the case, and that he hopes that an arrest will be made by the end of the week.
“We got some awful good leads, and they panned out to the tee. We went and got a phone line-up, and they picked one suspect out of the line-up,” he added.
Hodge activated the Whitley County Major Crimes Task Force at 9:08 p.m. to investigate the case.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Craig Reed is the lead investigating officer on the case.
