Redhound Rout
The Corbin Redhounds began their quest for a fifth straight district championship last Friday night by defeating the visiting Wayne County Cardinals 49-24.
The win was nice, but Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell knows his team missed a chance to send a stronger message.
“Obviously, real pleased with the victory, but it was uglier than we hoped for,” said Jewell. “We had an opportunity to go ahead a make a statement there and we didn’t.”
Corbin opened the scoring on the game’s first possession. The Redhounds promptly marched 64 yards on six plays and jumped on top. Blake Freeman found pay dirt for Corbin going 22 yards on the ground. The extra point attempt failed when the snap was mishandled leaving Corbin up 6-0.
After Wayne County shanked a punt, the Redhounds racked up some more yards. Keeping the ball on the ground nearly the entire drive, Corbin’s offensive line paved the way for the running of Freeman and Eric Blackwood. Freeman pounded it into the end zone from one yard out on the series’ ninth play for the score. Lucas Henson caught a Clint Cashen pass for the two point conversion, which gave Corbin an early 14-0 advantage.
Corbin continued its dominance late in the second quarter when they added another touchdown. After running the ball for much of the first half, the Redhounds showed off their passing game and ability to strike quick on offense. Cashen hooked up with Rob Maden on the first play of the drive for 45 yards and on the next play Ryan Tate caught a 19 yard touchdown on a slant route. The lightning fast possession ended when Chance Hendrickson tacked on the extra point to give Corbin a 2 1 -0 lead.
Wayne County got on the scoreboard just before the half. Tyler King hauled in a 25 yard pass that landed the Cardinals inside the Redhound five yard line and they didn’t waste the rare scoring opportunity. On the next play, quarterback Ryan Steele snuck in for the one yard touchdown run with 0:37 left in the half. Joe Coffey booted the point after through the uprights and Wayne County’edged to within 21-7 as the teams headed for the half.
After the Corbin defense stuffed the Cardinals to start the second half, Corbin continued to score at will. It was Tate’s 29 yard reception that setup the next Redhound touchdown. Cashen finished the drive by barreling four yards for the touchdown. Hendrickson’s kick increased Corbin’s margin to 28-7.
As the game looked to be in blowout mode, Wayne County wasn’t ready to quit. When getting the ball, the Cardinals came up with a big play. Steele and King connected again, this time for a 60 yard touchdown pass. Coffey’s kick cut the lead to 28-14 at the 4:46 mark of the third quarter.
Wayne County’s momentum continued when Corbin fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, which the Cardinals recovered. However, the Redhound defense was able to step up and force Wayne County to settle for a 26 yard field goal. The kick brought the Cardinals to within eleven at 28-17.
Wayne County continued to roll by stopping Corbin on their next possession. However, Cashen’s punt backed them up to their own 6 yard line. The Redhounds’ Zach Woody came up big, sacking Steele in the end zone for a safety on the drive’s second play. The two points gave Corbin a 30-17 cushion.
The Redhounds’ offense got going again after receiving the free kick. Starting with two completions of 14 to Freeman and 31 yards to Blackwood, Corbin got inside the ten yard line. Blackwood was then able to plunge in from a yard out to score for the Redhounds. The two point conversion was no good, but Corbin still led 3 6-17 with 9: 10 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals struck quick again on their next series. On the first play, Steele broke loose on the quarterback keeper for a 68 yard touchdown run. Coffey’s extra point made it 36-24.
Wayne County’s success in running the ball was something that Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell pointed out as an area his team must improve.
“They’re deceptively fast, they run the ball well and have got good balance, I” said Jewell. “For us to be a good ball club we have to get better as far as stopping things in there and we can’t relax anytime during a ballgame.”
However, Wayne County would get no closer. Their onside kick attempt failed when Corbin’s Dakota Taylor recovered it and virtually ended the Cardinals’ hopes of an upset. The Redhound offense took the field and put the game away with another score. They used a power running attack to drive the ball down the field. After Corbin ran off some big gains to get deep in Cardinal territory, it was Blackwood punching it in from one yard out to add to the lead. Even though the two point attempt was no good, the Redhounds had a big 42-24 advantage with 5:58 left in the game.
Corbin was able to add one more late score to put the finishing touches on their third win in a row. It was C.J. Light finding his way into the end zone for the first time this season. Light broke a 22 yard run to get close and then scored on a one yard burst. Chance Hendrickson closed the scoring out as he tacked on the extra point to give Corbin a 49-24 margin, which proved to be the final score.
Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell was glad to get the district win, but he and his team expected even better.
“That’s the good thing about the kids, their maturing a little bit, because they know what they should of done tonight,” said Jewell. “That’s a great win to get, we always want to go 1 -0, I’m proud of them in that aspect, but they know there were too many mistakes.”
The Redhounds will hit the road this week as they travel to Liberty to face-off with the Rebels of Casey County.
