Wildcats Roar
It didn’t take the Lynn Camp Wildcats long to scalp the Redskins Friday night at Cumberland High School. Senior Jimmy Chaffin went on the rampage, scoring four touchdowns in leading the Wildcats to a 49-7 win.
The win set up a huge showdown with the Somerset Briar Jumpers this week at the Briar Patch better known as Clark Field. Lynn Camp will travel to Somerset with an identical overall record (7-1) and well as district worksheet (4-0).
Somerset’s lone loss came at the hands of the highly ranked Danville Admirals while the Wildcats lost to a pretty good football team at Leslie County. The Jumpers have been ranked higher than the Wildcats all season and Lynn Camp wants to knock Somerset off the throne. The winner will have sole possession for first place and in all likelyhood, a district championship. The winner will more than likely get a home game against Phelps in the first-round of the playoffs. The runner-up gets Hazard.
Chaffin did most of the damage last week at Cumberland as the senior ran for 117 yards on 10 carries. Chaffin didn’t waste any time either, he scored on the second play of the game on a 47 yard run. The Wildcats had to go the extra step on the PAT. A bad snap left quarterback/holder Nick Scalf with the ball. He tossed the ball to Chaffin who found senior J.C. Keith in the end zone. Keith made it 8-0 right off the bat.
The Wildcats’ defense was intense as well and Nick Mills proved the point by intercepting a Zach Blanton pass. That led to a 59 yard drive that saw Joe Roskopf score from eight yards out. Chaffin added the PAT for a 15-0 lead.
The Redskins got their only touchdown of the game on their second possession. Cumberland went 69 yards on one play for the score. Blanton hit Michael Washington for the score. Jonathan Fields added the extra point and cut the lead to 15-7.
The Wildcats answered with an 80-yard drive capped by a Chaffin five-yard run. Lynn Camp missed the extra point but it wouldn’t matter. Four plays later, Cumberland was forced to punt and Chaffin returned the kick 81 yards to paydirt. Chaffin scored on the point after and the score stood 28-7.
Lynn Camp added three touchdowns in the second half and ended the game with a 49-7 rout. Chaffin had one of his most outstanding runs of the season when he returned an interception 103 yards for a score with no time left on the clock.
Josh Reynolds scored in the third quarter on a run from two yards out and Rodney Smith scored on a 38 yard run to close out the touchdowns. Chaffin added the point after on both TD’s for the final score.
