Three hurt in Corbin crash; driver charged with drug possession, DUI
Three people were hospitalized Monday evening after an auto crash, and two of them are facing criminal charges in the wake of the incident.
Police say that 39-year-old Andre Morrison was drunk and was driving too fast up Maple St. in Corbin when he dropped the passenger side tires of his truck off into a deep ditch and slammed the front end of his full-size Chevrolet 1500 truck into a raised concrete driveway. The truck flipped over onto the driver’s side and Morrison was thrown from the rear window of the vehicle onto the pavement.
“It appears that alcohol was involved in it,” Corbin Police officer Glenn Taylor, Jr. said. He is investigating the accident.
“He said a car was coming down the hill on his side of the road and he just turned to miss it,” Taylor added. “From witness statements, that’s false. A witness said he was right here and saw it. There was no other car coming. He just lost it in the ditch and flipped over.”
Morrison was lying behind the truck when police and EMS units arrived at the scene. Thirty-six-year-old Melissa Sams was pinned under a bed-topper after the crash, but managed to free herself before Corbin Fire Department rescuers arrived.
Another passenger, 19-year-old Drew Daniels, complained of shoulder pain after the accident.
All three were transported to Baptist Regional Medical Center for treatment. According to an accident report, Morrison suffered a broken pelvic bone and facial injuries as a result of the accident. He was charged with DUI, driving on a DUI suspended license, no insurance, driving with an expired registration plate and driving with an expired registration receipt. He was additionally charged with possession of marijuana.
Daniels was charged with alcohol intoxication.
Art Dingey, a nearby resident who witnessed the crash, said he watched Morrison fly out of the truck when it occurred.
“His back tires just kind of spun a little bit and he hit that culvert or whatever and it flipped over on its side,” Dingey said. “I saw the guy just fly out of the back window. I ran and had someone call 911. I didn’t know how bad he was hurt, but his face was bloody. It looked bad.”
