Redhounds Rumble
The Corbin Redhounds celebrated Senior Night in a big way last Friday night by wrapping up their fifth consecutive district championship and pummeling the Garrard County Lions 53-27.
The win was thanks in large part to an offense that produced 397 total yards, which Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell was more than pleased with.
“Super night offensively tonight, that’s the kind of night offensive teams dream about having,” said Jewell. “We started off well and just kind of kept clicking.”
The night was for the seniors and all eight of them excelled. The scoring started early as Corbin received the game’s opening kickoff and went on the attack. The Redhounds softened the Lions’ defense, driving nine plays for 73 yards. Corbin reached the end zone when Clint Cashen decided to tuck the ball and run it in from five yards out. Senior Chance Hendrickson tacked on the first of many point after kicks on the night to help Corbin jump out to a 7-0 lead.
On defense, it was another Corbin senior stepping up. Senior Josh McHargue ended a Garrard County possession when he fell on a fumble; It was a..recovery that the Corbin offense quickly took advantage of as the senior party continued when Cashen found senior Eric Blackwood for a 56 yard touchdown pass on the next play. Hendrickson’s kick was on the mark increasing the margin to 14-0.
Seniors Andy Millard, Lucas Henson, and McHargue anchor a strong interior defense for Corbin. McHargue, who had two fumble recoveries and the biggest hit of the night, knew how important it was for his team to play solid defense and get the ball back to the offense.
“We came out fast scoring and it was really good to shut them down early and get those other quick points up on the board, said McHargue. “We got up three touchdowns and it gave us a nice cushion to work with.”
The Lions continued to play Santa Claus on their next possession handing out another gift to the Redhounds in the form of a fumble. Corbin, thanks to the McHargue recovery, gladly accepted the ball and knew what to do with it. This time using only two plays to find pay dirt. Again, they went to the air for the score and again the Cashen to Blackwood recipe worked, only this time it was for a 12 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was mishandled and the score remained 20-0 with 1: 15 to go in the first quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, the Lions were able to make a dent in the Redhounds’ armor. Taking advantage of great field position, Garrard County mixed in the run and pass to get on the board. Shawn Williams ran it in from 2 yards out for the Lions. The point after kick was good and the score was 20-7.
Corbin wasted little time in building their lead back. After some hard running by Blake Freeman, the Redhounds piled up some more frequent flyer miles. It was another senior getting into the action as Ryan Tate hauled in a 58 yard touchdown pass to pad Corbin’s lead. The two-point attempt failed, leaving the score 26-7.
Garrard County continued to fight on their next drive when they were able to hit on a big play. Jason Prewitt caught a screen pass for the Lions and made some shifty moves en route to a 57 yard touchdown. The extra point was successful cutting the Redhound margin to 26-14.
On the ensuing kickoff, senior Andy Millard got the crowd and Redhound bench excited returning a kick 56 yards to setup another Corbin score. Tate cashed in on the scoring opportunity by catching a 16 yard touchdown pass. Tate’s senior night included 184 yards receiving on eight receptions. The two-point conversion was no good leaving the score 3244.
The scoring continued when the Lions regained possession. Using only two plays they found success in the passing game again. After a 20, yard completion got them close, Roger Christian caught a 35 yard touchdown pass. The pass and extra point pulled them to within 32-2 1.
Just before the half, Corbin cushioned their lead. Two completions to Tate setup Blackwood’s third touchdown of the night. The touchdown came in the form of a 25 yard reception. The senior all-purpose player tallied I I I yards receiving on four catches for the game. Chance Hendrickson brought the high scoring first half to a close by booting the extra point through the uprights to give the Redhounds a 39-21 lead.
Both teams’ offenses settled down in the second half. However, Corbin was able to get something going late in the third quarter. After relying on a pass happy offense in the first half, the Redhounds- used their line and power running attack to score. Running behind senior offensive linemen Jeremy Gibson and Jason Doran, Freeman waltzed into the end zone. Freeman’s touchdown rumble came from 10 yards -out and coupled with Hendrickson’s kick gave Corbin a 46-21 lead.
Corbin put the finishing touches on their fifth straight win by capitalizing on a Blackwood interception. Blackwood picked a Garrard County pass and returned it to the Lions’ two yard line where the offense faced little resistance. Freeman bulldozed his way into the end zone on the second play to give Corbin six more points. Hendrickson added his fifth extra point of the night and gave the Redhounds a 53-21 cushion.
Garrard County scored a late touchdown with Scottie Debord running in from a yard out. The kick was blocked by Rob Madon making the score 53-27,, which stood to be the final tally.
The win not only gave Corbin the district championship, but it also provided them with a couple of home playoff games, which Chance Hendrickson knew was key.
“This game was important,” Hendrickson said. “This win gives us two home playoff games and we remain being known as the dominating team in the district.”
Corbin will begin their run for a Class 2A state championship this week as they host the Washington County Commanders.
