OVERTIME LOSS
The Corbin Redhounds saw their season end in heartbreak fashion last Friday night losing to Louisville Desales 27-21 in triple overtime.
Although it was a tough way to end the season, Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell was proud of the his team.
“Its been an extremely low time early in the year and then its extremely high,” said Jewell. “I’m talking about seeing the kids finally get some gratification for all the hard work. Its been a tough situation, but I’m really proud of how they came out of it here towards the end of the year.”
The game’s regulation was a defensive battle. However, the Redhounds were able to strike first just before the half. Starting from their own 25, Corbin used the passing game to scramble down the field. Ryan’ Tate got things going after hauling in a 23 yard reception and then Eric Blackwood took care of the rest. Blackwood caught two passes on the drive including a 34 yard catch and a diving 19 yard touchdown reception from Clint Cashen. Chance Hendrickson tacked on the all important extra point kick to make it 7-0 with only 0:42 seconds left in the half.
The offense was short lived as Corbin continued to dominate the Desales offense, while Desales’ big defense recovered well. Corbin’s 7-0 advantage would hold up until late in the game.when the Colts saw the momentum turn their way. The Redhounds had the ball trying to run the clock out when Blackwood took a handoff and was tackled and more importantly, injured. Play was stopped for around 10 minutes as an ambulance was taken onto the field to cart the injured Redhound off. Blackwood was treated for a chest injury, but it was not as serious as first thought. When play resumed, Corbin was called for a questionable offensive pass interference nullifying a first down and following their next play they were forced to punt.
A pumped up Louisville Desales team took possession at their own 42 and put together a successful drive. The Colts’ passing game got on track as quarterback Garrett Reed hit Josh Patterson for an 18 yard gain and Jordan Paddock for a 33 yard completion on consecutive plays to get Desales to the two yard line. Corbin stood strong for two plays, but then Reinhold Leijcht took it into the end zone from two yards out for the Colts. Jarrod Zinser added the PAT to tie the score at 7-7 with 1:44 left in the game.
After getting pinned back on the ensuing kickoff, Corbin decided to run the clock out and send the game into, overtime!
Desales got the ball on the ten yard line to start the first overtime. On their first play, Andy Millard busted through the line for a sack to get the Corbin faithful cheering. However, on third down, Reed swept around the end for a 12 yard gain to get the ball to the one yard line. On the fourth down attempt, Zinser used second effort to fight off a couple of Redhound tacklers and score the one yard touchdown. The extra point kick gave the Colts a 14-7 lead.
Now Corbin would get their chance in overtime. Things didn’t look good early as the Redhounds were dropped for a loss on the first play, had an incomplete pass on the second, and was sacked on third down. Corbin then used a timeout to set up a fourth down play, which turned out to be electric. On fourth down, Cashen handed the ball to tight end Lucas Henson who then threw the ball to Tate for a 20 yard touchdown. Then, with the fans on their feet and the season on the line, Chance Hendrickson calmly booted a perfect point after kick to tie the game at 14-14 and send it into a second overtime.
Corbin started with the ball in the second overtime and cashed in again. This time it was a little less dramatic for the Redhounds. After a loss on the first play, Cashen and Tate connected for a pair of seven yard passes with the second one going for a touchdown. Hendrickson continued to make the kicks look easy as he made it 21-14 with the PAT.
Desales wasted little time in scoring their touchdown. On the first play, Reed found his big tight end Zack Barnett for a ten yard touchdown. Zinser then added a crucial extra point to tie the game at 21-21 and send the teams to a third overtime.
The Colts had possession first in the third overtime and made the most of it. Zinser took the ball around the left side and went into the end zone from ten yards out on their first play. On the extra point attempt, Corbin got the break they were looking for as the snap sailed over the head of the holder resulting in a failed try and leaving the score 27-2 1.
Corbin took the field with the hopes of winning the game after the botched snap. On the first play, the Redhounds were thrown for a loss of three yards, but in their second try Tate took a middle screen for ten yards to get to the three yard line. On third down, Blake Freeman was only able to manage a yard forcing a fourth down from the two. On the final play of the game, Corbin went with a power running play to the right side, but it was Desales coming up with the huge play by stopping the run short of the goal line and giving the Colts a dramatic victory.
Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell said his team had a chance, but just couldn’t capitalize.
“That was our opportunity, they muffed theirs (extra point) and we had a chance,” said Jewell. “It was all set up for us in that third overtime we just come up about a foot shy.”
The Redhounds finished the year by winning six of their last seven games. They graduate a senior class that won 37 games in their four years including three Pigskin Classic bowl wins, four district titles, two region championships, a semi-state appearance, and a state runner-up. The very enjoyable class to watch consisted of Andy Millard, Chance Hendrickson, Lucas Henson,, Josh McHargue, Jeremy Gibson, Eric Blackwood, Jason Doran, and Ryan Tate. The group wore the red jersey with the pride that Corbin football is all about delighting the Redhound faithful always and for that, we thank them.
