With only four wrestlers available for the Capital City Classic, coach Dustin Brock knew it would be an uphill battle for the Colonels to finish very high in the tournament as a team. So when the Colonels finished fifth he was pleased.
“They did a very good job to finish sixth,” said Brock, a recent University of Cumberlands graduate and former wrestler for the Patriots. “Our strongest boys went to this meet and did a very good job.”
Sophomore D.C. Evans won the 103-pound division. He defeated Brad Macklin of St. Xavier in the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye. He got past Montgomery County’s Rex Stephens in the semifinals then defeated Danel Bowling of McCreary Central in the finals.
Joey Caddell finished third in the 119-pound class. He pinned Dunbar’s Ethan Gabbard in the first-roound then defeated Bryan Thompson of Franklin County in the quarterfinals, 11-3. He lost to McCreary Central’s Derrick Corder, 9-4.
Caddell cam back in the consolation bracket and defeated Jeffery Weckbach of Campbell County 13-3 then beat Dunbar’s Abdul Aghill for third place.
In the 140-pound class, Jacob Chancellor had to fight off 15 orther competitors to finish fourth. Chancellor defeated Hector Rosadso in the first-round then beat Conner’s Preston Adams in the second-round. He was defeated in the semifinals by Harrison County’s Beau Sanders. In the consolation bracket he beat Austin Stocker of Dixie Heights before losing to Franklin County’s Phillip Jones.
Junior Jaron Singley finished third in the 171-pound class. Singley got a first-round bye then beat Harrison County’s Jacob Hatfield with a pin. In the semfinals he lost to Dunbar’s Sheridan Cokoy in a pinfall.
He came back to pin Tony Heber of Dixie Heights and edged T.J. Shinkle of Conner, 8-7 for third place.
The Colonels will be back in action today when they travel to Danville for a meet. They will also be in the Danville Invitational Saturday.
