Police to close case in Woodbine death
Investigator plan to officially close a probe into the circumstances surrounding the January death of a Woodbine woman, officially calling the cause of death a “self-induced overmedication.”
Margie Gail Corbin, 53, was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived at her apartment across from Friendly Food Mart on Hwy. 6 in early January.
Initially thought to be an open and shut case, police took a closer look at the incident when neighbors told authorities they witnessed someone carrying Corbin, apparently unconscious, from a car to her apartment.
“The concern I had with it was what state she was in prior to them carrying her in,” said Whitley County Sheriff’s Detective Chuck Davis, who headed up the investigation into the case.
After conducting interviews, Davis said Corbin was assisted to her apartment by two men in the parking lot because she was unsteady on her feet. Foul play in the case was eventually ruled out.
Police were initially called to the scene by Corbin’s son and girlfriend who reported she was unresponsive. Davis said Corbin, a friend Angela Owens, 57, and another woman had gone to a pharmacy in Williamsburg earlier in the day to pick up some prescriptions. The three made another stop, before returning Corbin to her home.
“She had some severe health problems … some heart and lung problems,” Davis said. “I’d say with the overmedication that she took, that’s what induced her death. I don’t think she done it purposefully. I don’t think she wanted to take her life … She had an addiction and she just took too much.”
Autopsy results showed Corbin had numerous prescription medications present in her bloodstream at the time of her death including oxycodone and hydrocodone.
Davis said he plans to officially close the case on Friday.
