Corbin Loss
The weather was a bit chilly Monday night as the Corbin baseball team began the 2006 season hosting 13th region foe Clay County at House Field.
The Redhounds fought gallantly for seven innings, but were unable to produce enough offense to prevail, dropping their opener 5-3.
Corbin coach Jeff Garmon said he believes inexperience played a huge role in the Hounds’ disappointing performance. “This game is really the first time that we’ve been out on the field as a full unit,” said Garmon. “It’s like I said to the boys earlier, we understand that we’ve got some youth and some inexperienced players out there on the field, but we’re not going to use that as an excuse.”
Corbin plated their first run of the game when sophomore Clint Cashen capitalized on a defensive overthrow at third base, which tied the game at 1-1.
Clay county would not be satisfied with a tie. In the top of the third the Tigers busted out three runs, two of which came off the bat of Anthony Hibbard.
The Redhounds, however, would not go away quietly, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the third to close the Tigers’ lead to 4-3.
That was as close as the Hounds would get, however, as the Tigers dealt the finishing blow when Corbin shortstop Josh Hamlin bobbled a fielder’s-choice grounder in the top of the fourth allowing Hibbard, who reached base on a single, to cruise to the plate, solidifying the win.
Josh Hamlin, who went 3 for 4 in the loss, believes that some younger players will have to step up in order for the team to continue to grow. “We’re just going to have to have some of the younger guys step up this year and make some plays for us,” said Hamlin.
“We’ve got some key players also this year in Clint Cashen, Lucas Henson, and Brandon Hedrick who will have to come to play every day, and if they do that, we’ll be just fine.”
The Redhounds will be back in action Thursday when they travel to Somerset. They will head to Fort Walton Beach next week.
