After winning the Cumberland Falls Classic more than a week ago, the Corbin Lady Redhounds wanted to prove it was no fluke. They got the chance when they took on ninth ranked North Laurel Monday.
In somewhat of a pitcher’s duel between North Laurel sophomore Abby Sears and Corbin ace, Felicia Pigg, the Lady Jaguars came out on the winning end, 5-1.
Corbin coach Gary Akins said he was more than pleased with his team’s play against one of the top programs in the state.
North Laurel (21-5) has won 16 of their last 17 games and five in a row coming into Corbin. The Lady Jaguars scored one in the first, two in the second and one in the third for a 4-1 lead. Corbin scored its lone run in the bottom of the third when Ashley Turner led off the inning with a single. She scored on a Kirby Soles base hit.
The teams combined for 14 hits in the game with each getting seven. Corbin was led by Andria Shirar, who went two for three. Soles, Turner, Allie Burton and Katie Akins all hammered out a hit against North Laurel’s All-State pitcher.
Sears also led the Lady Jaguars from the plate, going two for three.
Corbin (13-9) will be on the road this week. They will travel to Knox Central (2-12) Thursday and Lynn Camp (1-10) Friday. They will play at Jackson County Monday and at Middlesboro Tuesday.
