Akins steps down
Several student-athletes signed to further their career on the hardwood or fields last week. Joe Siler will attend Union College on a basketball scholarship and Max Sisson will play soccer at Maryville College in Tennessee.
I’ve actually had the honor of coaching Joe in AAU basketball. He is an outstanding young man to be around and works harder at improving his skills more than anyone I can think of. The only fault I had with Joe was shooting. He wouldn’t shoot enough for me. I remember he scored 30 some points in an AAU game against Louisville team and the next game I had to threaten him to shoot the ball.
He is no doubt one of the most unslelfish players I have ever been around. I love to press and he did an excellent job at the top of the press. Someone ask me today if I thought he could play at Union. Joe is the type guy that will not quit. It may take him a couple of years to get a lot of playing time…but I would not hestitate to bet when he is a junior and senior, he will be leading the Bulldogs at the point.
I don’t know a lot abot Max, but I enjoyed every minute I watched him play when the ball was on his end of the court. Oh, I guess I should mention Max was the goalie for the Corbin Redhounds soccer team.
Last year he was a captain on the team and you could tell. His leadership was second to none. He fought hard for every save, no matter whether he had to dive for a save or run over a couple of people to get to the ball. He always tried to keep the defense in line.
There’s no doubt in my mind that he will be a star for Maryville College.
Corbin softball coach Gary Akins has been ask to resign. I think Gary’s only problem, he is to nice to be on the sidelines. He really worked hard to see that the Lady Redhounds went in the right direction and Corbin was going in that direction.
I think it is hard to coach your on daughters, you are going to constantly get criticized. In the case of the Lady Redhounds, all the coaches had a daugher or grand-daugter on the team. That only made matters worse.
Corbin will have a dangerous team come tournament time. They will be matched against the Whitley County Lady Colonels in the first-round of the tournament. I hate to see those teams play because a good team will be eliminated.
