BLUE DAY
The Whitley County Lady Colonels turned back the Jellico Lady Blue Devils Monday afternoon on the softball diamond, 7-4.
The Lady Colonels jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 7-0 until the top of the seventh when Jellico scored four runs to make it close.
“Overall I was really pleased with our performance against Jellico,” said coach David Halcomb. “We have made four or five changes with our defensive alignment, and I think we have hit on a couple of things that will be a benefit to our team once the girls get more experience at their positions.”
“Miranda Archer pitched real well for us and our defense backed her up nicely. The past two games we have been without our starting catcher due to an injury, but April Lindsay has done an exceptional job behind the plate”, said Halcomb. “April is only a sophomore and worked extremely hard during the off-season to get better and I think people are starting to see that.”
The Lady Colonels took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Sarah Bourland hit a two-out single to get things started. Paula Powell walked and Brittany Fox doubled in the two runners. She scored on a Maggie Thornsberry double for a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, April Lindsey led off with a double then scored on a Danielle Lindsey sacrifice. Kayla Grubb followed with a base hit then a triple by Bourland gave the Lady Colonels a 5-0 lead.
Lindsey scored in the bottom of the fourth and Thornsberry scored in the fifth on a Stephanie McCullah base hit that gave Whitley County a 7-0 lead.
“We have a tough week ahead of us by hosting Middlesboro on Thursday and then traveling to play in Presentation’s “Rockin’ Round Robin” tournament this weekend,” said Halcomb.
” The season is headed down the stretch run and we need to be playing with consistency. I keep telling them that I don’t think we have totally peaked all season – so I think the best of the Lady Colonels is yet to come.”
The Lady Colonels (15-7) will play at least three games in the Rockin Round Robin in Louisville this weekend. They will take on the North Bullitt Eagles, Hopkinsville High School Tigers, Spencer County Lady Bears and host Presentation.
