Sweep
The Lady Jackets swept a pair of ball games from the Knox Central Lady Panthers Monday, winning the first game 9-7 and taking the second game, 4-3.
In game two, Corissa Black allowed just two hits and three runs as Williamsburg came from behind in the bottom of the fourth to post a one-run win.
Knox Central scored in the top of the first inning but the Lady Jackets answered with a run, tying the game at 1-1. Samantha Burr drew a one-out walk, then stole second base. She went to third on a passed ball and later scored when the ball got away from Central catcher, Brittany Shelton.
Williamsburg tried to push a couple of other runs across the plate when Cecily Sears walked and moved to third on the passed balls. Whitney McAnally was hit by a pitch. Sears tried to score on yet a third passed ball but Shelton made the play to Hill for the out.
The Lady Panthers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth but Williamsburg got the sparked they needed in the bottom of the inning to pull out the win.
McAnally led off with a walk and Stephanie West went in to run for the Williamsburg catcher. Rachel Croley followed with a bunt, moving West to third. She had stolen second on the previous pitch.
Ashleiah Taylor followed with a bunt, but West held at third. Erin White then popped out to Shelton. The Knox Central catcher tried to catch West at third but threw the ball into the outfield, allowing West to score.
Down 3-2, Black and Ashley Hamblin drew walks to load the bases. Burr answered with a two-run single as Taylor and Black scored to push Williamsburg ahead, 4-3.
Black sent the Lady Panthers down in order in the top of the fifth and got the win for Williamsburg. The teams played two five-inning games.
Sears got the win in the first game as the Lady Jackets held off a Knox Central rally in the late innings to win 9-7.
WIlliamsburg (8-14) took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Croley, Taylor, Black, Hamblin, Senters and McAnally all scored for coach Jim Black. McAnally had a two-run double in the inning.
Knox Central closed the gap to 6-3 in the top of the fourth but the host added three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame for a 9-3 lead. Knox Central scored four in the top of the fifth to pull within two.
Hamblin led the Lady Jackets, going two for three with two runs scored. Senters scored two runs and was two of three. Black made the most of her two walks, scoring both times she reached base.
Willamsburg is scheduled to close out the regular season against Clay County Thursday at 5:30.
The Lady Jackets will take on top-seeded South Laurel in the district tournament Monday night at Whitley County.
