Extra Innings
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets rebounded from losses to North Laurel (9-6) and Bell County (8-5) last week to win two straight games. The Jackets defeated Berea 16-5 Saturday in Berea then held off the Lynn Camp Wildcats in a thriller Monday night, 9-8 in eight innings.
Williamsburg (16-12) got a base hit by eighth grader Ryan Moses to score Geoffrey Witt for the game winning hit.
Williamsburg catcher Aaron Root was set to score the winning run but got picked off third. Root led off the inning with a walk from Lynn Camp pitcher Ryan Moore. Moore then got Cody Harrell to ground to first. Coach David Bullard then intentionally walked Witt and Chase Fields to load the bases.
Root was then caught off base at third leaving Witt and Fields on base and Moses at the plate. The eighth grader delivered a hit to the second base side of the field and Witt scored the running run.
Lynn Camp (15-14) took a 6-1 lead in the game but couldn’t hold on. The Jackets got to Lynn Camp starter, Travis Whitehead in the bottom of the fifth when they rallied for six runs, taking a 7-6 lead in the game.
Harrell led off the inning with a walk followed by a Witt bunt. Fields followed with a two-run double before Bullard sent Moore to the mound.
He had trouble against the red-hot bats of Williamsburg. Ryan Moses started with a single and Abrams followed with an RBI single, pulling the host within, 6-4.
Raymond Surber loaded the bases with a bunt and Will Moses followed with a single to right field that sent Moses and Abrams across the plate for the tying runs. Moses would later score on a wild pitch, sending the Jackets ahead by a run.
The game was far from over as Lynn Camp forced a tie in the top of the sixth when Matt May hit a single then scored on a Moore triple. Williamsburg came right back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning when Cody Harrell walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Witt groundout.
Once again the Wildcats tied the game in the top of the seventh when Matt Cope drew a walk and later scored on a sacrifice by Tyler Brock. Williamsburg failed to answer and the game went into an extra inning. The Jackets’ defense held Lynn Camp in the top of the eighth then scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
“We let it slip through our grasp,” said Bullard. “They had a big inning and we couldn’t stop it.”
Williamsburg coach Don Stricklin said. “It was a struggle from the state. Lynn Camp played well.
“We didn’t get the key hits in the early innings,” said Stricklin.
Lynn Camp is scheduled to close out the regular season against Clay County Thursday and Corbin Friday. Both games are slated for Lynn Camp High School.
Williamsburg is scheduled to take on Knox Central Thursday at Briar Creek and close out the regular season at Cumberland Saturday in a noon start.
