Rebel Shoot-Out
It has become one of the premier softball tournaments in the Commonwealth. The 33rd Annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shootout will begin Friday night with 36 teams from across Kentucky and surrounding states.
Teams will come from Richmond, Lexington, London, Manchester, Lafollete, Bond, Paris and of course locally.
“This should be another good tournament,” said director Jimmy Hendrickson. A couple of former champions will return and try to claim the top prize. The Bond Dodgers (2001, 1998) and Trophy World (2003) will be back along with last year’s runner-up, NWO. According to Hendrickson, they have changed their name to Arnett Softball.
Locally, the Mavericks, coached by Bill Crook will be in the tournament. Along with Edgewood of Williamsburg. “They have a pretty good team,” added Hendrickson. London’s HDI will challenge the field along with the Regulators and Southeast Rebels.
With the one homerun limit, Hendrickson feels he gets the best “C” and “D” teams in the state. “We do that so both “C” and “D” teams can play in the tournament. During the state tournament, “D” teams can’t hit any home runs and “C” can hit two,” said Hendrickson.
“It keeps everybody even with a one homerun limit.” said Hendrickson. “You have to win this tournament on defense and base hitting.”
“That’s the way it has turned out over the past,” according to Hendrickson.
Hendrickson said the tournament grew because of the prizes and trophies awarded. “We went to some tournament that gave out used trophies,” said Hendrickson. “I always said I wanted to put on a tournament and give good stuff.”
Along with the first, second, third, fourth and fifth place trophies, he names a 15-man all-tournament team with an MVP from both the champion and runner-up team. “One MVP will receive a Worth bat and the other will get a glove,” said Hendrickson. “That helped bring more teams in. It might not be the best tournament in the state but we try. And, we are proud of that.”
Hendrickson said the Woodbine Rebel Shootout is one of the oldest tournaments in the state. “The only one older that I can think of is the Smokey Mountain Classic in Tennessee.”
Last year the five finalist were from different towns. CDS/ICA of Lexington won the tournament, beating NWO of Cynthiana in the finals. London’s Calvary Baptist was third while the Trumps of Frankfort were awarded fourth place. The Stallions of Manchester and Trophy World of Richmond tied for fifth.
“This year’s event is expected to be as big as ever, we invite everyone to come out and enjoy a great weekend of softball,” said Hendrickson.
