Police: Alcohol likely a factor in fatal collision
Police say alcohol is likely a factor in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon near Corbin that killed an Ohio woman, and hospitalized her 14-year-old son.
According to Kentucky State Police, charges are pending against 41-year-old Terry Keith, of Corbin, in connection with the accident. Trooper Kenneth Fuson is investigating the accident.
Fuson said Keith was traveling “at a high rate of speed” north on Cumberland Falls Hwy. when he lost control of his 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck in a curve, skidded and struck a 1998 Mustang convertible driven by 37-year-old Brenda Watts of Dayton, Ohio. Watts was pronounced dead a the scene by Whitley County Chief Deputy Corner Jerry Croley at about 4:28 p.m., about an hour and 15 minutes after the accident was reported.
Watts son, Josh, was also injured in the crash, but survived. He was airlifted via Lifenet helicopter to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington where he remains in stable condition.
Keith, also severely injured in the crash, faces criminal charges, according to police because alcohol is “suspected as a contributing factor.” The specific criminal charges have not yet been revealed.
Keith was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment and was last listed in stable condition.
Police, fire and rescue crews shut down Cumberland Falls Hwy. to through traffic for about four hours due to the accident. Authorities say Keith was likely involved in another traffic accident reported about half an hour earlier near the I-75 Exit 29 ramp in southern Laurel County. All local police agencies were told to observe for a vehicle matching the description of the one Keith was driving at the time of the crash.
Fuson was assisted at the scene by Trooper David Lassiter, members of the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and the Whitley County Coroner’s office. Members of both Oak Grove and Woodbine volunteer fire departments assisted with extrication of the victims.
