Woodbine Classic
Elk Creek Vineyard of Frankfort put on an impressive show in the 33rd Annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shoot-Out, winning the weekend tournament. Elk Creek was a perfect 6-0 over the three-day event to claim their title.
Their championship run began with a powerful 27-17 win over a state ranked team, the Bond Dodgers Friday night. They continued their dominance Saturday by winning two more games. They beat Clines Construction of Richmond and the Southeast Rebels of Corbin. Elk Creek went into Sunday’s play with a 28-8 victory over the Southeast Rebels.
Sunday, they didn’t let up, their first game was against Night Train of Barbourville and it proved to be a stiff test. However, they showed their defensive ability and grabbed a 7-5 win to advance to the championship game of the winner’s bracket in the 36-team field.
Elk Creek faced off with R & S Softball in the winners’ bracket final. Both teams hit the ball well and put up a lot of runs, but Elk Creek was just too much as they beat the Cynthiana team, 21-16 and advanced to the championship game of the tournament.
In the championship game, Elk Creek faced R & S Softball once again.
R & S made it into the championship game after stopping a terrific run made by HDI of London. HDI lost their first game of the tournament then ran off seven straight wins before finally falling to R & S in the losers’ bracket championship game.
Elk Creek scored 14 runs in the top of the first inning, but R & S didn’t quit as they came back and scored 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within 14-10. Elk Creek wasn’t to be denied though as they kept hitting their way to a shoot-out championship.
Elk Creek went on to win 29-15 and capture a prestigous Woodbine Rebels Softball Shoot-Out title and trophy. The win capped a great weekend of softball and crowned a very deserving champion.
