Redhound Win
It wasn’t a complete game, but it was much closer according to Corbin coach Steve Jewell. “We played a little bit better in the second quarter and held them, but we still gave up a 91 yard touchdown run which we can’t have,” said Jewell. “Those type things are going to bite us, just like they did the two previous weeks.”
On paper it looked as if the Redhounds dominated the Lexington Christian Academy Eagles in a 20-7 win. Corbin ran twice as many plays as the Eagles, 65-32 and outgained the Lexington school, 267-123.
But, it was the defense that drew praise from the Corbin coach. “If you look at our overall stats on the year, the second and third quarters are when we are giving up the majority of our points,” said Jewell. “We didn’t give up a lot…we just gave up seven and we were able to come out and stop them in the second half and I was real pleased with that.”
“On the flip side, we didn’t move the ball at all in the second half, or didn’t get it in the end zone,” he said. “We moved it between the 30 and 30 and ran some clock off but we still need to punch it in the end zone.”
“I would like to have had a couple of more touchdowns in the second half,” said Jewell. “Because we were flirting around again and they had opportunities, they had a tip pass they caught for a touchdown and they had a kickoff return, but there were penalties on the plays.”
“We have to really sure up our kickoff and punt coverage and make some changes there,” said Jewell. “We are still looking for that complete ballgame.”
Junior Josh Sanders carried the load for the Redhounds last week, scoring three touchdowns on 29 carries. He was in the end zone on runs for four, one and five yards. His longest carry of the night was 29 yards. “He earned very yard he got,” said Jewell. “He couldn’t get that big break, usually when you hit the ball up there that many times you get some of those 20-30 yarders.”
Junior quarterback Clint Cashen threw the ball 23 times and had 14 catches on the night from Rob Madon (5), Corey Sewell (4), Josh Sanders (3), Kevin French (1) and Jake Reeves (1). The five receivers had a total of 155 yards through the air.
Defensively, Zach Woody and Daniel Nantz led the Redhounds with four tackles each. Each had a sack as well as Josh Martin who caught LCA quarterback Dalton Henzman in the backfield for an 11 yard loss.
The Redhounds will host the Bell County Bobcats Friday night in what hopes to be a classic showdown between two mountain strongboys. The Bobcats have won five of the last eight meetings and three of the last four.
Corbin has only won one of four home games during that time. Bell County won on Log Mountain last season 41-13.
Jewell down-played this game as being one of the mountain classic but did say, “When you have competitive programs you look to those teams, kind of like when we played Rock.”
Many fans feel this will be a game much like the Rockcastle County game when the Redhounds battled the Rockets before losing 2-0.
“You kind of look at history. Teams just develop into a history of a game,” said Jewell. “We didn’t play South Laurel for a long time, but they have been really big grudge matches these past few years, always close ball games, nip and tuck and the same scenario is with Bell County. There have been some years were we have just been outmanned with injuries and other things.”
Will the teams show off their power game, running the pigskin? “You think of that when Corbin and Bell County play.” said Jewell. “But, still these past couple of years, especially since we have had Clint (Cashen) we have spread the ball. Coach (Dudley) is doing a little more passing with the (Kyle) Nelson kid this year. He has a couple of receivers he likes to throw to.”
But, Jewell said when it is all said and done, “You will have to stop their power running.”
