NO PLAYOFF!!!
The Whitley County Colonels saw their playoff hopes dashed by the South Laurel Cardinals Friday night at WCHS, 21-20.
Many felt a turnover on the final drive of the night cost the Colonels. It certainly didn’t help things, but two missed extra points proved to be the difference in the game.
“We basically did everything we wanted to do,” said first-year coach Jim Black. “Except, score enough points to win.”
“I felt like we did everything we wanted to do except we stopped them 14 points in the first quarter and then gave up another big play late in the game,” said Black.
Once again the Colonels did fall behind early and tried to make the comeback. It was something they had done all season, give up points in the first half and make a huge effort to come from behind.
This time the Colonels did make the come from behind and took the lead only to give up a big play in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals took the win back to London.
South Laurel scored 14 points in the first quarter when quarterback Ricky Bowling scored from one-yard out with 8:21 in the opening period. The Cardinals came right back on their second possession of the game and scored when Bowling hit Wes King on an 18 yard play. Kicker Nick Ellington missed his first PAT, so South Laurel coach Jason Chappell went for two on the second TD. Bowling converted to the two-point try and the Cardinals led 14-0.
Whitley County (1-7) got on the scoreboard late in the second period when the Colonels put together a 97-yard drive. Senior Cody Jeffries scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:04 left in the half. Jeffries ran in the conversion, pulling the Colonels within a touchdown.
Like in many of their games this season, the Colonels came out and took charge of the third quarter. Jeffries scored on a 21-yard run with 6:30 in the quarter then Powers scored on a 10-yard run four minutes later as the Colonels took a 20-14 lead. But they left the door open when they missed the two PAT’s.
The big play came late in the fourth quarter when Bowling hit Logan Baker on a 46-yard pass. The touchdown tied the game and when Ellington added the kick, the Cardinals owned the lead once again, 21-20.
The Colonels tried to get the momentum back on the final drive of the game, but a Powers run was fumbled with South Laurel getting on the ball. Bowling picked up a crucial first down to run out the clock.
“They made a play when they needed to and we didn’t,” said Black. “We had the ball going in and fumbled it on the 20 yard line.”
“As far as the game goes, I thought we controlled it, all but that one play in the second half,” Black said.
The Colonels will be off this week, but will be back in action against George Rodgers Clark next Friday. “We want to get some people healed up and get healthy,” Black said.
“We want to work on some things that we need to continue to work on and look at some younger kids and see if they can do anything.”
Whitley County can play the spoiler role from here on out with wins over Clark County and North Laurel. “We would like to get some momentum going into the last two games,” Black said.
