The Corbin Redhounds ended the regular season on a high note Friday night in Lancaster with a 61-6 whipping of the Garrard County Lions.
“We got after them from the start and stayed after them,” said Corbin coach Steve Jewell. “We capitalized when creating things. A few ballgames this year we have got that lead and we kind of relaxed. We stayed after them and were able to put them away.”
“I feel like Garrard threw in the towel at times but the kids stayed after them,” Jewell said. “Still looking at it on tape we made a lot of mistakes, we had a lot of technique errors that we don’t want.”
With the mistakes, techniques and little things that happen, Jewell feels his team has plenty of room to improve and have yet to reach a peak. With some tough games down the line, that’s a good thing for the Redhounds.
As far as Friday’s game, the Redhounds bolted out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter when Corbin scored on a six-play, 72 yard drive with 3:14 on the clock. Junior Corey Sewell capped the drive with a five yard run. The Redhounds added a two-point conversion when Rob Madon scored the PAT for an 8-0 lead.
Corbin got the ball right back and scored on five plays from the 40 yard line. Josh Sanders scored with 1:10 in the period from one yard out.
The biggest play of the night came when Corbin got the ball at their own 37 yard line with :14 left in the quarter. Junior quarterback Clint Cashen hooked up with Jordan Wagers on a 63 yard play that ended in the end zone for six more points. Wagers added the PAT and the Redhounds were up 22-0.
Like Jewell said, the Redhounds stayed after the Lions and forced a couple of turnovers that led to four second quarter touchdowns. At half-time, the clock was rolling with a lopsided 48-0 score.
Eleven Redhounds saw action carrying the ball for 285 yards on 37 rushing attempts. Freshman Ryan Fritts led the way with 116 yards on 10 carries, most of which came in the second half. Sanders also ended the night with 105 yards on 10 carries.
Cashen threw the ball just eight times, completing six passes for 152 yards. Sewell was on the end of two passes for 59 yards and one TD while Wagers had the 63 yard TD.
“One of the other factors,” said Jewell. “The kids were excited and played great team ball together, they were very unselfish about whether we were running or throwing. As far as playing as a team it was one of our better ballgames.”
It’s playoff time and the Redhounds must face these same Lions Friday night at Campbell Field.
Jewell said his team must guard against a letdown. “We have to guard against that mentality of 15,16 and 17 year old kids, Because I am sure they will hear it enough from the public this week,” said Jewell, referring to the lopsided win.
“It goes back to errors, we didn’t make the same errors against this team as we did against Wayne County on the road. We made five turnovers, laid it on the ground twice and had three picks or that game could have been different,” said Jewell.
“Anytime you don’t have positive things happen, we have some turnovers and bam, you have it again. I remember very well back in 1996 we did the same thing, beat a team really well, two weeks later they came in here and took us into overtime and we lost to a good Madison Southern team,” said Jewell.
“So, you always have to guard against those type of things,” he added.
Despite their 2-8 record, Garrard County has played one of the toughest schedules in Class AA football this season. That schedule was ranked seventh, one behind the Redhounds by the Massey Ratings. Nine of the 10 teams Garrard County played this season will be in this week’s playoffs. The same can be said for the ‘Hounds.
Garrard County quarterback Jordan Phillips was pretty much off the target last week, hitting on 10 of 26 passes but he still managed 108 yards. A lot of that was due to an aggressive Corbin defense.
Jewell expects something different from the Lions this week. “I’m sure they are watching their tape of the game and I’m sure we will see a different defense.”
“On the flip side, we had success with things and it would be tough for us to change things,” said Jewell. “Those are the pros and cons that we have to watch out for this week.”
