Coach Robinson
Patrick Robinson returned to his alma mater, Williamsburg High School back in June to become an assistant basketball coach with the Yellow Jackets under Rick Jones. Little did he know less than four months later he would be named the head coach.
Superintendent Denny Bird announced Monday that the 24-year old Williamsburg graduate will be the new head coach.
“I am excited,” said Robinson. “I’m ready to get things going. These kids have been working pretty hard. I am more excited for them.”
“I am excited,” he said. “It’s a lot of responsibility and it’s going to be hard work. It is a positive thing.”
Robinson played for the Jackets from 1996-2000 then went on to Cumberland where he attained his Business degree. After living in Nashville for a couple of years, he returned to work on his MBA at the University of the Cumberlands.
Robinson said his style of play will be similar to that of Rick Jones. “We really hadn’t gotten into sets ot anything yet,” said Robinson. “We will be up tempo when we can against teams I think we can go up tempo against.”
“You’ll see a lot of half-court man with a lot of pressure,” said Robinson. “We will be very versatile hopefully.”
“It’s all happened fast, but I think I am ready,” he said. “The coaching experience will be fun and these kids have worked hard and deserve to have someone who will keep working them hard.”
“The excitement of somebody young, ” Robinson said. “I know a lot of people will say I am inexperienced but a lot of that can be traded off for excitement and enthusiasm, so hopefully I will be able to bring some of that to the table.”
“Starting out is going to be tough,” said Robinson when talking about the upcoming schedule. “We start out with Pineville and I know South Laurel is in our first couple of games.”
“That’s tough for an especially young team,” he said. “We have no juniors but a decent amount of seniors when you include football players.”
“We have a boat load of sophomores and freshmen, so I think its important to keep those kids positive,” Robinson said. “We are going to play hard but whatever happens those first three or four games, we have to remain confident and strong.”
“We have to keep working at it because it’s going to come around,” added Robinson. “It may take a few games but it may not, so as long as we keep a positive attitude, I think we will be fine.”
