Opening Win
A win is a win and Corbn coach Jennifer Parsons will gladly take the 59-50 win over the Madison Southern Lady Eagles Monday night in Berea.
The Lady Redhounds, coming off a runner-up finish to the Clay County Lady Tigers in the 13th region tournament last season, has some work to do.
“We had a real slow start,” said Parsons. “We had some early turnovers that allowed them to stay right with us. We got into some foul trouble in the first half. Mikkah (Rogers) picked up two quick fouls at the end of the first quarter. Abby Baylor and Rikki Walden got into some foul trouble as well and we couldn’t get our chemistry going.”
“We came out in the second half and took control of the game,” said Parsons. “We led the whole game but just couldn’t put them away. We would get the lead out to ten and they would come right back.”
But, by the end of the first quarter, the Lady Redhounds led 10-8. Nine first half turnovers allowed the Lady Eagles to keep the game close. Corbin outscored Madison Southern 15-14 in the second period and went into the dressing room at the half with a 25-22 lead.
Corbin picked up its defensive pressure in the third quarter and it allowed Corbin to outscore Madison Southern 15-10. The Lady Redhounds led 40-32 at the third stop.
The pace picked up in the final period but the Lady Redhounds were able to run with the Lady Eagles and won their fourth period of the game, 19-18.
“We had 20 turnovers,” said Parsons. “I hope that was just a chemistry problem. I was anticipating that until we get some experience out on the floor.”
Freshman Kelci Jones started her varsity career with a big night, scoring 18 points to lead the Lady Redhounds. She actually had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Jones hit six field goals and was 6 of 10 from the line.
“She is a lot like Katie Akins around the basket,” said Parsons. “She picks up a lot of rebounds and gets a lot of put-backs. She goes strong to the basket so she get to the free throw line a lot.”
Mikkah Rogers and Brittany Jackson tossed in 12 points each while Rikki Walden finished in double figures with 10 points.
“We were balanced, but slow to get started,” said Parsons.
The Lady Redhounds will travel to Whitley County Friday night for a double-header with the Redhounds. The boys will play first followed by the girls in prime time.
It will be the first district game for both teams and key to the standings come March.
“It’s a big district game,” Parsons said. “Anytime you go to Whitley County, it’s difficult to pull out the win no matter what type team you have. It’s important to us to stick to our game plan.”
“We know them, we know their players,” said Parsons. “They have an experienced group and a very good Whitley County team. We have to stick to our game plan and not allow any external factors to figure in.”
“We have a new team and we can’t count on any thing from games before,” said Parsons. “We have to go in and we have to improve ourselves with each game. Controlling the tempo will be key for us and knowing where Stephanie McCullah is at all times.”
