TOURNAMENT CHAMPS
After playing two close games in the 11th Annual Bowman Memorial Tournament, Williamsburg rolled past the Pineville Lady Lions Monday night to capture the 2006 tournament title, 62-42.
Williamsburg took the championship with an outstanding defense in the second and third quarters when they held Pineville to just 12 points while tossing in 38 during the same stretch.
There were seven lead changes in the first period as the teams battled to take charge of the game. Down 13-10 inside the last minute of the first quarter, Williamsburg went on a 6-0 run to close out the period. Kat Hoffman scored from under the basket while Samantha Burr hit two of four throws. She also hit a basket from the paint to push the Lady Jackets ahead, 16-13.
The streak continued into the second quarter as Williamsburg scored the first 19 points of the quarter. In all, Williamsburg went on a 25-0 run that pretty much sealed the deal.
Shawnda Lovett put the Lady Jackets ahead by double figures with a three-point play at the 3:58 mark, 25-13.
Two baskets by Lovett, including a three pointer, and a long shot by Lakin Ayers pushed the lead to 33-13.
Pineville didn’t score in the quarter until the 1:04 mark when Ashley Madon hit one of two free throws. Madon also hit the only field goal, a three-pointer in the final ten seconds as the Lady Lions trailed 36-17 at the half.
“We wanted to be aggressive,” said Williamsburg coach Jim Rains. “I think our man to man full court defense finally too effect.”
“That big run made the difference,” said Rains. “I think it broke their spirit.”
“I told our kids that if we could maintain or increase the lead in the first four minutes we should be OK,” added Rains.
The Lady Jackets (4-3) not only kept the momentum, they outscored Pineville 11-4 in the first four minutes and 18-8 for the quarter. They led 54-25 heading into the final period.
Hoffman, who was named the tournament MVP, tossed in 15 points but Lovett was the leading scorer against Pineville with 21 points.

Williamsburg 37, Barbourville 35
The Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets couldn’t pull away from the pesky Lady Tigers of Barbourville Thursday night in the first-round of the Bowman Classic at Lynn Camp High School. But, they did hang on for a 37-35 win.
“This was a good win for us,” said Williamsburg coach Jim Rains. “It was an evenly matched game.”
The Lady Jackets led most of the way but had to continually hold off the Lady Tigers. Every time the Lady Jackets looked to pull away, Callie Mills would hit a big shot to lead the Lady Tigers. She finished with a game high 19 points.
But, Williamsburg had two big weapons of their own in Kat Hoffman and Shonda Lovett.
Leading by seven midway through the second quarter Williamsburg couldn’t put the Lady Tigers away as they pulled within four 20-16 at the half.
Barbourville outscored the Lady Jackets, 8-4 early in the third quarter as the ball refused to go through the nets for Williamsburg. Mills hit back-to-back three pointers as she tied the game, 24-24.
But, four straight free throws by Kelly Bryant and Hoffman allowed Williamsburg a 28-24 score at the end of three quarters.
Barbourville closed to within 28-26 before Lovett hit a three pointer to post a 31-26 lead. Williamsburg had a chance to go up by seven on several trips down the floor but just couldn’t get the ball to drop.
Mills and teammate, Ashley Smith combined for the next five points to tie the game at 31-31.
Lovett went to the line for two bonus situations, but missed the front end of both. Barbourville was missing as well on its end of the court.
Hoffman put the Lady Jackets back on top with 2:48 left but Barbourville scored the next four points for a 35-34 lead in the game. Mills hit an old fashion three-point play to send Barbourville ahead, 34-33.
However, Lovett drained a three pointer with 1:13 left for a 36-34 margin.
