Jackets beat Jellico
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets went 1-2 in the Bowman Classic at Lynn Camp last week. Williamsburg lost to the host Wildcats, 84-60 then to Pulaski County Friday, 67-32, but picked up a win Saturday when they defeated the Blue Devils of Jellico, 84-65.
Five Yellow Jackets finished in double figures with Aaron Cunningham leading the way with 18 points.
The Devils took a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter but it wouldn’t hold up. Jellico led 14-8 when Cunningham scored the final five points of the first quarter. He hit a three pointer with :25 left then scored off a fast-break as the Jackets pulled within one, 14-13 at the end of the first period.
The Williamsburg full-court press resulted in points to start the second period. Thomas Frazier hit a three pointer then went inside for a basket as the Jackets took an 18-14 lead. Daniel Kilgore scored off a turnover and pushed the lead out to six (20-14) before Jellico got back on track with a basket.
A 13-4 run late in the quarter put the game away for the Yellow Jackets. Cunningham and Steven Taylor hit a pair of three pointers while Kilgore went inside for a basket. The Jackets led 37-26 at the half.
Senior Michael McCray gave Williamsburg its biggest lead (55-38) of the game when he scored mid-way through the quarter, but by the end of the period the Jackets led 57-45.
Brandon Conlin’s seven straight points pushed the Jackets over the 20-point mark late in the game.
Conlin finished with 11 points while Taylor added 14 points. McCray tossed in 14 points and Teague 10 points.
Pulaski Co. 67, Williamsburg 32
MVP John Perkins poured in 28 points as the Pulaski County Maroons defeated the Yellow Jackets, 67-32.
The Maroons jumped out to an 18-11 lead at the first stop and led 34-22 at the half. The Jackets had trouble getting started in the third quarter when they only had two baskets while Pulaski County scored 24 points and led 57-26.
McCray led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points.
Lynn Camp 84, Williamsburg 60
Williamsburg jumped out to an 8-4 lead but the Lynn Camp Wildcats went on a 9-2 and never looked back in beating the Yellow Jackets in the first-round of the Bowman Classic at LCHS Thursday night.
The Wildcats led at the first stop, 20-16 then expanded their lead to 41-27 at the half. Craig Bargo led the Wildcats to the second quarter run. He scored the first five points of the quarter and 26 points for the game, tying Williamsburg’s Jacob Teague for game honors.
The teams got in a run and gun match in the third period, tossing in 42 points. Lynn Camp got the better of Williamsburg with 22 points. The ‘Cats led 62-47 heading in the final period. They were able to pull away for the easy win, outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 12-13 in the final eight minutes.
Teague led the Yellow Jackets with a season high 26 points, he also pulled down 13 rebounds.
