FIFTH PLACE
Coach Jennifer Parsons felt her team played well in the Berea Holiday Tournament after going three of four. The lone loss came to eventual champion, Christian County, 48-32.
After getting an opening-round win over Estill County, the Lady Redhounds lost to the Lady Colonels of Christian County but, bounced back to beat Woodford County, 47-46 then derailed St. Henry, 53-49 for fifth place.
Playing with four players six-foot or taller, the Lady Redhounds had their hands full against the Crusadors. Parsons knew the outside game would be key to a Corbin win.
And that was the case for Corbin as Mikkah Rogers hit a three pointer and came back with a near second (standing on the line) as the Lady Redhounds took a 5-0 lead and forced St. Henry on the defensive.
Corbin continued to have the hot hand and hit from the outside as Lyndsay Champlin hit a three pointer that gave the ‘Hounds a 12-4 lead. St. Henry went on a run behind all-state forward, Stephanie Niemer. Niemer tossed in seven of the final nine Crusaders’ points as St. Henry pulled within one, 14-13.
However, an Abby Baylor three point play with six-seconds left pushed the first quarter lead to 17-13.
Six-foot junior Olivia Brooks started the second period with six points and got St. Henry on a 12-5 run. When Niemer scored from the paint with 2:22 left in the opening half, the northern Kentucky team owned a 25-22 lead.
Corbin (7-2) didn’t quit, the Lady ‘Hounds got a three pointer from Champlin and a basket from Kendra Igo to retake the lead, 27-25. Senior Brittany Jackson hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to send Corbin to the dressing room with a 29-25 lead,
Corbin never allowed St. Henry to take the lead in the third quarter but the Lady Redhounds lead was one point, 37-36, heading into the final eight minutes.
Rogers started the fourth quarter with a three pointer and a lay-up to push the lead out to six (42-36).
St. Henry came right back with eight of the next nine points during an 8-1 run. Free throws by Niemer with 3:43 left pushed the Crusaders on top, 44-43.
Corbin then got the spurt to put the game away. Jackson gave Corbin the lead for good from close range, then a Champlin three pointer with 3:15 left, gave the Lady ‘Hounds a 48-44 lead. Champlin followed with another basket and the lead was six.
St. Henry closed to within three (52-49) with seven seconds left, but that was the closest they would get.
Champlin finished with 16 points while Rogers tossed in 14 points. Jackson added double figure points with 10. Niemer led St. Henry with 19 points.
Corbin 47, Woodford Co. 46
Corbin eased ahead of Woodford County in the first quarter then took a double-digit lead before holding on for a one-point win, 47-46.
Rogers and Jackson scored all 12 points for the Lady ‘Hounds in the first quarter. Rogers scored the first six points before Jackson added two free throws and a basket for a 10-6 lead. Rogers scored a last-second basket as Corbin led 12-10 at the first stop.
With the game tied at 16, Corbin went on an 11-0 run for a 27-16 half-time score. Champlin started the run with a basket followed by six straight free throws. Kelci Jones hit a pair as well as Jackson, who was four of four. Champlin ended the quarter with a three pointer.
Corbin built a 15-point lead, 38-23 before Woodford County took charge and outscored the Lady Redhounds, 8-1. Corbin’s only point in the final three minutes came on a free throw by Meredith Grove.
Corbin was able to push its eight-point lead out to 11 at the start of the quarter when Jackson hit one of two from the line then added a basket from close range.
Woodford County then went on a 6-0 run, cutting the lead to five before Jackson hit a pair of free throws.
Corbin had to survive from the line where Rogers hit a free throw with 1:55 to put the Lady ‘Hounds ahead 45-41. Woodford County took a 46-45 lead on a Nicole Carter three pointer with 1:06 left.
Woodford County had a chance to take a three point lead with :17 remaining but 6-1 senior Chelsea missed two free throws. Corbin grabbed the rebound and Jackson went for the final shot. She was fouled with 7.4 and hit both free throws to sneak out with the win.
Jackson led all scorers with 17 points. Rogers finished with 10 points.
“I felt like we got to a slow start,” said Parsons. “We got things going in the second and third quarter and then we hit two or three dry spells and let them cut it to five points.”
“We have to learn how to play with the same intensity when the other team makes a run,” said Parsons. “Woodford County has a scrappy team. We played them at this same time last year and we were two completely different teams.”
