SHOCKED
The Corbin Lady Redhounds may have played their worst game of the season in a shocking loss to the Knox Central Lady Panthers, 55-53 in Barbourville Tuesday night.
The loss came on the heels of a key game against the South Laurel Lady Cardinals.
Can the Lady Redhounds rebound from the loss? “We will after tomorrow’s practice,” said Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons.
The Lady Redhounds started the game in somewhat of a hole as they had to play without the services of senior Brittany Jackson, the team’s leading scorer and point guard.
“She turned her ankle Monday in practice,” said Parsons. “She probably could have gone, we have been to therapy and all that, but I didn’t want to make it worse for Friday night.”
“It was swollen and I didn’t want to make it worse,” said Parsons.
“Tonight turnovers killed us,” she said. “We were hilter-skilter on our offense for three quarters.”
“I felt like we did better in the middle of the third when we came back and took the lead and made good defensive stops,” said Parsons. “But, offensively we couldn’t get things going. We were trying to rush it and turned the ball over 31 times for the game.”
“You can’t win a game with that many turnovers,” said added. “Knox Central is competitive and they had some players to step up but turnovers killed us.”
A Lyndsay Champlin three pointer gave Corbin the early lead but the Lady ‘Hounds had to play from behind most of the night.
After the third tie of the game (10-10), Knox Central took a three point lead and stretched it to six (17-11) before the Lady Panthers led 17-13 at the end of the quarter.
Knox Central led at the half, 31-25, but Corbin (10-5) dominated play in the third quarter and outscored the host, 13-2 over the first seven minutes of the period. Knox Central (9-8) scored the final four points of the quarter and trailed 38-37 going into the final frame.
A Kelci Jones basket gave Corbin a three point margin but that was the last lead for the Lady Redhounds.
The Lady Panthers tied the game at 41-41 and Wendi Messer gave Knox Central the lead for good.
Meredith Grove pulled Corbin within one (53-52) with :14 left, but Terra Tuggles hit a pair of free throws with :12 left to ice the upset.
Champlin and Jones led all scorers with 14 points while Rogers finished the game with 11 points.
