Tuesday tire fire accidental
Thick black smoke filled the sky off south Main Street in Corbin yesterday close to midday as a group of about 20 tires blazed in a storage area owned by Corbin Materials, Inc.
Firefighters with the Corbin Fire Department battled the blaze for about an hour Tuesday, pouring water on the fire ensuring it was extinguished. Burning tires can be notoriously difficult to put out.
“We were burning some pallets and we thought the fire was about out and I guess the wind shifted and got it into some of our older tires,” said Trae Pennington, Manager at Corbin Materials. “It was an accident.”
The pallets were about 40 feet away from the tires. Workers for the company said they hosed the tires down with water before burning the pallets, but they caught fire anyway.
“We tried to put it out, but as soon as we saw we weren’t doing any good, we called the fire department,” Pennington said.
The company hauls off the used tires regularly.
Firefighters had the blaze under control quickly. No one was injured.
