Cold shooting Corbin ends season against Clay
Tuesday was a long night for the Corbin Lady Redhounds. Coach Jennifer Parsons’ team suffered a 65-35 loss to the Clay County Lady Tigers, ending their season on a sour note.
The Lady Redhounds got off to one of their worst starts of the season, missing their first 13 shots of the game while committing 11 turnovers in the process. That was 24 times down the court without a basket. It allowed Clay County to build an 11-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 29-5 lead at the half.
The only point Corbin was able to muster in the first quarter came on a free throw by sophomore Hayley Smith. Corbin trailed 7-0 before Smith went to the line at the 1:47 mark and hit one of two free throws.
The second quarter was much better as the Lady Redhounds connected on just one field goal. That basket came at the 4:18 mark of the quarter when Shae Roaden scored in the lane. Kelci Jones added a free at the start of the quarter and Roaden hit one of two with :58 left in the half.
At the same point, Clay County was having success from the field. The Lady Tigers were 4 of 10 in the first quarter but hit on 8 of 13 from the field in the second period to end the half with better than 50 percent shooting. Junior center Belle Jackson led the way for the Lady Tigers with eight points.
Jackson, the Player of the Game, finished with 24 points to pace the Lady Tigers, who advanced to the semifinal against Middlesboro, a first-round winner over Knox Central.
Smith led Corbin with nine points on the night.
