REDHOUNDS
The Corbin Redhounds captured back-to-back wins last week, defeating the Rockcastle County Rockets Saturday at Corbin’s House Field, 5-1 and holding off the McCreary Central Raiders in Stearns, Friday night, 10-8.
“I thought we played well against Rockcastle County,” said Corbin Coach Jeff Garmon. “We put together a complete game.”
A pair of two run homers by senior Eric Salmons gave the Redhounds plenty of fire power and a good defensive effort by the defense kept Rockcastle County off the bases as sophomore pitcher Omar McDaniel scattered three hits in his win.
After setting the Rockets down in order in the top of the first, Corbin responded with two runs in the home half of the inning. Senior Cory Sewell opened with a double to left field. Catcher Cody Duncum moved Sewell to third on a sacrifice. Rockcastle County pitcher, Dustin Reynolds was able to strike out senior Josh Smith, but Salmons took a 1-0 count over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.
The Redhounds struck again in the third when Duncum hit a one-out single to center field. Josh Smith followed with a run-scoring double to right field as Corbin moved ahead 3-0. Salmons followed with his second round-tripper over the left field fence as the ‘Hounds took a commanding 5-0 lead.
McDaniel got in some trouble in the top of the fourth when Dustin Bullock opened the inning with a single to left field. An infield error allowed John Saylor to reach base. Jake Riddle moved Bullock into scoring position at third with a fielder’s choice. Riddle scored on a fielder’s choice by Grant Burdette.
A second to short to first double play got McDaniel out of the inning and Corbin back on the right defensive track.
The Rockets rallied in the top of the sixth with McDaniel on the mound. Bullock drew a walk to open the inning then went to third on a double by Saylor. A walk to Riddle loaded the bases. McDaniel gave way to Ben House who got the next three batters in order to get Corbin out of the inning unscathed.
Ben Jones closed out the game with a save for the Redhounds after getting the Rockets in order in the top of the seventh.
