Whitley County Volleyball Coach David Halcomb has stepped down. Alicia Whitworth will take over as head coach of the Lady Colonels with Fawn Greer serving as her assistant.
Halcomb, who also coaches softball at WCHS, led the Lady Colonels to a 34-22 record in his two seasons at Whitley County. His wife Neeka served as the assistant coach.
“It has been a great two years leading our volleyball program at Whitley County High School,” said Halcomb. “Neeka and I had a wonderful experience and enjoyed working with a group of outstanding girls. However, we felt like it was time to step back and free up some of our time.”
“Coaching two varsity sports takes up a tremendous amount of time and energy,” he said.
“My son is getting older and will be participating in fall sports next season and I want to be able watch him and support him.”
“I am proud of what we were able to accomplish in our two seasons as coaches – winning the East Kentucky Mountain Classic in 2007 and winning the 49th District championship this year. Our players made this a special endeavor for us as coaches, they did all we asked them to do and I am grateful for that. We will be great Lady Colonel volleyball supporters next season and wish them continued success, which I am sure will happen.”
Whitworth played volleyball for the Lady Colonels from 2000-2003.
“I am really excited to be your coach,” Whitworth told her new team in a meeting Friday morning.
“I really love the sport,” Whitworth said. “I am really looking forward to working with Fawn.”
Whitworth is a 2008 graduate of the University of Kentucky.
Greer is no stranger to the sport, having played at South Laurel High School where she was all-region, all-state and earned a college scholarship.
She, along with her husband, Chad, has coached a club volleyball team for the last four years with Horizon Volleyball.
“We want you to work hard and step up your game,” Greer told the girls.
“I have always wanted to coach in high school and this is a great opportunity,” Greer said.
Halcomb said about the new coaches, “I am really excited about the direction we took in getting our new volleyball coaches. Alicia played here a few years ago and will do a really good job with the girls.”
“Fawn will be a great asset to our volleyball program as well. She has a great knowledge of the game and what it takes to win at this level,” said Halcomb.
“Both of them are very enthusiastic and excited to get started with the team – I think it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved. With the talented group of girls we have coming back from last season’s team and the addition of these new coaches I think we will contend for another District and Region championship.”
