The Corbin Lady Redhounds pulled off the upset Tuesday night and beat the South Laurel Lady Cardinals, 4-3 in the championship game of the 50th District Tournament at Corbin High School.
“That’s the greatest win I have had in my coaching career,” said Corbin Coach Chris Hart.
“It has to be one of the best we have ever had here at Corbin,” added Hart.
“I don’t how far it goes back for district championships in fast pitch, but I don’t know of one in recent history and I know there hasn’t been one since South Laurel came into the district,” said Hart.
“They have pretty much dominated it and I told our girls a couple of years ago that if they kept working hard and came ready to play that we will eventually catch-up and be able to compete with them,” he added.
The Lady ‘Hounds got out to the early lead scoring three runs in the top of the first inning off South Laurel starter Destinee Fisher.
Allison Woolums led the game off with a double then went to third on a ground out by Andria Shirar. Callie Hendrickson followed with a run-scoring double that put Corbin on top to stay. Senior Kendra Igo followed with her second home run of the season and the Lady ‘Hounds led 3-0.
South Laurel fought back with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Shirar, who had been hitless in 13 straight trips to the plate, busted out of her slump with a leadoff double in the top of the sixth, She scored on a Sara Hill double for a 4-2 lead.
The run proved to be a big one as South Laurel answered in the bottom of the inning with a run.
Corbin held off a South Laurel challenge in the seventh for the victory.
