ONLY ONLINE: Accused murderer demands case go before grand jury

At his own request, the case of accused murderer Daniel Grubb is headed to the Knox County Grand Jury.
During a preliminary hearing held Tuesday in Knox District Court, Grubb appeared before Special Judge Roderick Messer, accompanied by public defender Deaidra Douglas. Douglas told Messer that because of a conflict of interest, another public defender would be assigned Grubb’s case.
When Messer offered to continue Grubb’s preliminary hearing for two weeks, Grubb asked that the case be waived to the grand jury. "I will consider that," Messer said, at which time Grubb again asked that the case be waived. Messer then ordered that the case be waived to the June 26 grand jury session.
Grubb is accused of murdering Woodbine resident Jeremy Johnson, whose remains were discovered on May 15 at a location just off Helton Hollow Road on Candle Ridge Road. After the remains were found, Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office forensic pathologist Dr. Emily Craig came to the scene and collected the remains.
On the morning of May 21, using medical and dental records, Craig was able to identify the remains as those of Johnson. Lead investigator Kentucky State Police Det. Jason York then obtained an arrested warrant for murder and served it on Grubb, who was lodged in the Clay County Detention Center, where he was jailed on tampering with physical evidence charges for allegedly moving Johnson’s body.
Johnson was last seen on June 10, 2008 when he was leaving the former Angels and Wings Sports Bar in Corbin. Over the past two months, police had extensively searched an area along KY 6 near KY 459 for Johnson’s remains. However, the site where the remains were found was about four miles from the previous search site. Another suspect, 64-year-old Bobbie Ray Walters, also was charged with tampering with physical evidence for allegedly moving Johnson’s body.
As of press time Tuesday, Grubb remained lodged in the Knox County Detention Center in lieu of $200,000 cash bond.
